VOLLEYBALL (3-4): Lady Yotes open Cascade Conference play with tough road trip to No. 12 Southern and Oregon Tech

LAST WEEK: at Seaside Invitational, San Diego, Calif. – vs. Mount Marty (W 3-0), vs. No. 8 Point Loma Nazarene (L 3-2), vs. No. 10 Madonna (L 3-2), vs. Ashford (W 3-0)

COMING UP: at No. 12 Southern Oregon, Friday, 7 p.m. (PT); at Oregon Tech, Saturday, 7 p.m. (PT)

BUHLER NAMED CCC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: College of Idaho outside hitter Sarah Buhler (Middleton, Idaho / Middleton HS) was named Monday the Cascade Conference Volleyball Player of the Week, as announced by the league office in Portland, Ore.  The junior had a banner weekend at the Seaside Invitational in San Diego, Calif., earning All-Tournament Team honors.  She averaged 3.38 kills per set in the Coyotes four matches, leading the team to a 2-2 overall record, including three-set victories against both Ashford (Iowa) and Mount Mercy (S.D.).  Buhler recorded a career-high 21 kills in the Yotes five-set loss to No. 10 ranked Madonna, and added 13 kills in a five-set loss to No. 8 Point Loma Nazarene.  She leads the league with 95 total kills and is fourth in the loop with a 3.4 kills per set average.

YOTES PLAY WELL IN CALIFORNIA, BUT NET A SPLIT: The Lady Yotes made the long trip to San Diego last week, playing four matches in two days at the Seaside Invitational, hosted by Point Loma Nazarene.  The Yotes took care of business in three sets against a pair of unranked NAIA teams, but faced stiff competition against Top-10 NAIA foes.  The C of I held a two games to one lead against both host Point Loma Nazarene and against Madonna –but could not hang on.

TROUBLE IN FIVE-SET MATCHES: When matches have been forced to a deciding fifth set over the past two seasons, the Lady Yotes have struggled in the 15-point situations.  The C of I have managed to win just two of the ten matches extended to a fifth set – going 2-5 last season (wins over Vanguard and Oregon Tech), while three of the four losses this season have been in the fifth set.

OVERALL TRIP NUMBERS: Along with the outstanding trip by Sarah Buhler, Kristin Henning (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS) continued to show why she has been a force in the Cascade Conference the last two years.  The junior recorded 36 kills with a .338 hitting percentage in the four matches, while recording 13 total blocks and a pair of aces.  Marcella Hernandez (Torrance, Calif. / El Camino CC) excelled at the net, recording 17 kills, 15 digs, and a team-high 23 blocks.  Madie Machurek (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) handle most of the setting duties, recording 99 assists and ten aces, while Naomi Reimer (Killarney, Man. / Killarney SS) continued to serve well, racking up ten aces.  Courtney Gamel (Nampa, Idaho / Skyview HS) led the way defensively with 42 total digs.

CAREER RECORD BOOK: Four C of I players currently rank among the Top-10 in the all-time career record book.  Leading the way is Kathryn Ely (La Grande, Ore. / La Grande HS), who is fifth in school history with 1,199 kills.  Also Kristin Henning ranks No. 6 all-time in blocks with 279, Madie Machurek is seventh in assists with 731, and Naomi Reimer is eighth in assists with 523.

THE GAMES COUNT THIS WEEKEND: The 20-match Cascade Conference schedule opens up this weekend, as the Lady Yotes look to defend their back-to-back loop titles.  They open up play Friday against rival Southern Oregon in Ashland, playing the No. 12 ranked team on their home court.  The Raiders (2-5) have played a tough opening season schedule – with losses to Fresno Pacific, Concordia-Irvine, and Cal Baptist, with their two wins coming over Hope International and Simpson.  The potent SOU attack is paced by All-Star middle Mia Wortel (1.7 k/s, 0.9 b/s) and CCC Player of the Year Lindsey Stone (7.9 a/s, 1.1 d/s) – but are hitting just .079 as a team through seven matches.  It is the 68th meeting between the teams, with the Raiders holding a 52-15 all-time edge – with the two clubs split a pair of matches last season.  Saturday, it’s over the hill to Oregon Tech, where the Owls (5-2) received votes in the preseason NAIA poll.  OIT has sandwiched five wins around losses to Fresno Pacific and Northern State – thanks to the play of Krista Wooley (3.4 k/s, 3.0 d/s) and Nicole Andrews (2.6 k/s).  The Lady Yotes swept Tech last season and hold a 30-17 all-time series edge with the Klamath Falls school.

TOUGHEST ROAD TRIP: The Lady Yotes have made the trip to Southern and OIT 18 times previously, and have swept the trip only twice – the last time in 2006.

RECAP – DAY 1: The C of I volleyball team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the 2008 Seaside Invitational in San Diego, Calif., routing Mount Marty (S.D.) in the opener in three-sets, then watching No. 8 ranked Point Loma Nazarene rally from a 2-1 deficit to top the Yotes in five sets.  The No. 9 ranked Coyotes won the first match of the day against the Lancers, 25-16, 25-18, 25-6 - as all 13 ladies that made the trip to California were able to see game action.  Sarah Buhler led the way with 11 kills - including five in each of the first two sets.  Kristin Henning added eight kills, with Jessie Link (Tonopah, Nev. / Nicholls State U.) adding six kills in only ten swings.  Madie Machurek and Naomi Reimer combined for 29 assists, seven aces, and nine digs from the setter position, while Courtney Gamel had nine digs.  The feature match of the night against a pair of Top-10 teams was all it was billed to be, as the Sea Lions took the match 25-19, 19-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-13.  The Lady Yotes were in position to steal the victory in Set 4, holding a 23-21 edge, however, three consecutive C of I hitting errors and a ball handling error handed it to PLNU.  In the finale, the match was tied at 11-11, before the Sea Lions scored three points.  The Coyotes staved off a pair of match points, before a C of I attack was blocked at the net to close out the match.  Buhler and Kathryn Ely led the way with 13 kills, with Henning adding ten kills and four blocks.  Marcella Hernandez had a well-rounded night, recording three kills, three aces, five digs, and ten blocks.  Machurek had 29 assists, with Stacie Drumm (Salem, Ore. / South Salem HS) recording 14 digs.

RECAP – DAY 2: The C of I split a pair of volleyball matches Saturday afternoon at the Seaside Invitational in San Diego, Calif., losing a five-set marathon with No. 10 ranked Madonna, but making quick word of Ashford in three.   In the opener, the Yotes had a 2-1 lead in the match, but lost to the Marauders of Livonia, Mich., 22-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-21, 15-12.   Sarah Buhler led The C of I with a career-high 21 kills, along with six blocks, and six digs, with Kristin Henning adding 11 kills in the loss. Marcella Hernandez had eight kills and eight blocks, with Madie Machurek adding 28 assists and 11 digs.   In the afternoon game, the Yotes pounded the Saints of Clinton, Iowa, 25-17, 25-14, 25-20.   Buhler had nine kills in the win, with Machurek adding 25 assists, five aces, and six digs.

ABOUT THE COACH: Liz Mendiola is in her eighth season as head volleyball coach at The C of I.  During her first six seasons at the helm, the Coyotes have advanced to six consecutive Cascade Conference tournaments, four NAIA regional tournaments, and back-to-back trips to the NAIA National Championships in 2005 and 2006.  Last season, the squad won their second-straight CCC title and advanced to the NAIA Region I Tournament semifinals - while being ranked as high as No. 6 in the national poll.  During her career, she has amassed a record of 164-68, the most wins and highest winning percentage in school history.  In 2006, she led the Lady Yotes to their best season in program history, compiling a 35-4 record - earning CCC and NAIA Region I Coach of the Year honors.  The Yotes won their first Cascade Conference championship in 24 years, becoming just the second school to complete the league schedule without a loss.  The Coyotes also captured their second-straight CCC Tournament title, along with their second-straight NAIA Region I Tournament title, before placing ninth at the NAIA Championships.  Her team set a school-record with 22 straight wins and heads into the 2008 season with a 36-match home win streak.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (2-1): Lady Yotes go 2-1 on California road trip, open khome season Friday vs. Rocky Mountain

COMING UP: vs. Rocky Mountain, Friday, 4 p.m.

SEASON TICKETS: Single-person or family season tickets will be available for all College of Idaho men’s and women’s soccer matches, Single-person season tickets are $30, while a family pass is $60 – which will get fans into the remaining 15 C of I games this fall.

YOTES OFF TO STELLAR START: After a 600-mile bus ride, The College of Idaho women’s soccer team made the most of their first-ever trip to California, winning two of the three matches played.  It marked the second-straight season that the Coyotes have opened the year with a 2-1 record and the second time in three seasons that the Yotes have won their opening game.

HUGHES NAMED DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: For her efforts on the trip to California, C of I goalkeeper Sadie Hughes (Courtenay, B.C. / Vanier SS) was named Cascade Conference Defensive Player of the Week.  The junior did not allow a goal in the first half against Mills and pitched a shutout against Holy Names.  For the week, Hughes allowed three goals in 228 minutes in the net, posting a 1.18 goals against average.  It marks the second time that she has won the honor in her collegiate career.

ROCKY HEADS TO TOWN: The Lady Yotes open up their home schedule this Friday afternoon, hosting Frontier Conference foe Rocky Mountain.  The Bears (2-2) head to Caldwell looking to stop a two-game losing streak, although both losses were to Top-10 teams in Concordia and Simon Fraser.  Rocky is led offensively by former NAIA All-American Anna Clark, while defensively, former All-American goalkeeper Vanessa Peters has been solid in the net this season.  It marks the seventh time the two teams have met, with the Lady Yotes holding a 3-2-1 series edge, including a 1-0 victory over the Bears last season.

GOALS GALORE: The trip to California allowed the Lady Yotes to sharpen their goal scoring skills – something that they struggled with throughout the 2007 season.  In fact, in the first three games this season, the Coyotes scored a combined 11 goals – just six shy of the amount the team scored last season in 19 games.  The eight goals scored by the team in the victory over Mills was the most goals scored by the Lady Yotes in five years.

SOLID FRESHMEN DEBUTS: Four different true freshmen made a splash during their first-ever collegiate road trip – helping the Lady Yotes to the 2-1 mark.  Leading the way was Chelsea Heffner (Meridian, Idaho / Mountain View HS), who scored a goal in each of the first two games – including the game-winner in the victory over Holy Names.  Ashley Page (Emmett, Idaho / Emmett HS) had a goal against Dominican and an assist against Mills, with Kelly Hardegree-Ullman (Boise, Idaho / Mountain View HS) registered a goal against Mills.  Rounding out the group was Anne Ball (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS), who recorded an assist in the win over Mills.

RETURNERS HAVE BIG TRIP: It wasn’t just the youngsters excelling for the Yotes, returners put up big numbers in the Golden State.  Sophomore Jamie Reichel (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS) recorded a hat trick in the victory over Mills, equaling her 2007 season output in the opening game.  Emily Dickerson (Nampa, Idaho / Vallivue HS) had two goals against Mills and added a goal and an assist against Dominican – already eclipsing her career totals for goals and assists from her first three years in the program.  Rounding out the returners was Mandy Greif (Payette, Idaho / Payette HS), who had a goal and four assists on the weekend – moving her into a tie for third all-time in career assists with 11.

FOUR KEY PLAYERS MISS THE WEEKEND: The Yotes were successful in California despite missing four key players with nagging preseason ailments.  Forward Macy Egerman (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS), and defenders Melissa Garrison (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS) and Lauren Winterholler (Idaho Falls, Idaho / North Idaho College) are hopeful to return to the line-up this weekend, while striker Amanda Barrieau (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) will be unavailable.

RECAP – C OF I 8, MILLS 1: Jamie Reichel recorded a hat trick and an assist and Mandy Greif added a goal and three assists, as The C of I recorded their most prolific scoring game in five years, routing Mills College, 8-1, in the season opener for both teams Thursday in Oakland, Calif.  Despite a 17-2 edge in shots during the first half, the Lady Yotes were held scoreless until the 40th minute, when the sophomore Reichel scored off an Ashley Page assist  to give The C of I the lead.  Back-to-back goals from senior Emily Dickerson in the first five minutes of the second half ballooned the lead to 3-0.  Reichel added two more tallies, with the junior Greif, and freshmen Chelsea Heffner and Kelly Hardegree-Ullman each scoring one.  The Yotes had a commanding 41-5 edge in shots, including 24-4 on goal - while recording all seven corner kicks in the game.  It was the most goals scored by a C of I team since 2003, when the Lady Yotes defeated Cascade, 8-1.

RECAP – C OF I 1, HOLY NAMES 0: Chelsea Heffner beat the goalkeeper in a 1-on-1 situation with five minutes left in the opening period and the goal held up, as The C of I knocked off Holy Names, 1-0, Friday in Oakland, Calif.  The win for the Lady Yotes helped the squad begin a season with two victories for the first time in the 20-year history of the program.  After multiple HNU counter-attacks posed threats early, including a goal disallowed due to an offsides call, the Yotes cashed in late in the period, as Mandy Greif connected with Heffner with a through-ball and beat Brianna Witrado for the game-winner.  "It was a weird game," said head coach Niki Taylor.  "We had trouble with their counter-attacks in the first half, but they made changes in the second half that played into our strengths.  We were able to maintain possession the majority of the second half and preserve the shutout."  The Yotes outshot the Hawks (0-1) 8-3, with Sadie Hughes recording the shutout in goal for the Purple and Gold.

RECAP – DOMINICAN 3, C OF I 2 (OT): Eleanna Mendez scored the game-winning goal in overtime off a long throw in, as the Dominican University women's soccer team knocked of The C of I, 3-2, in a battle of unbeaten teams in San Rafael, Calif. on Sunday afternoon.  Mendez, who got the Penguins (3-0) on the board in the 26th minute, corraled the long throw in, beat two defenders, and slotted the ball in the back of the net for the winning tally.  The Lady Yotes nearly had a victory, as a first half goal by Ashley Page off an Emily Dickerson assist tied the score, with Dickerson tying the game with a goal off an Allie Dufault assist in the 75th minute.  The C of I tried to hang on, but Bridget Folan found the net with under five minutes left in regulation to send the game to overtime.  The Coyotes had a 9-7 edge in shots - but only three of the shots were on goal.

PRESEASON CCC/NATIONAL POLL: Unlike the CCC Preseason Coaches Poll, the NAIA releases a Top-5 poll for each conference prior to the release of the NAIA Top-25 rankings.  The Coyotes were ranked No. 4 in both preseason polls, although the polls do not look alike – as Concordia, Corban, and Oregon Tech are atop the national list, with the Yotes and Southern Oregon rounding out the ranking.

ABOUT THE COACH: Niki Taylor is in her third season as head coach of The College of Idaho women's soccer program.  In her two seasons with the Coyotes, she helped the Lady Yotes to their first-ever back-to-back playoff appearances, including their first-ever postseason win in 2007, advancing to the Cascade Conference Tournament semifinals.   A graduate of Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., Taylor was an honorable mention all-conference player for the Bulldogs in 1999 and 2000, helping the squad to an NCAA Division II regional championships.  She went on to assist coach Mike Cannon during the 2001 season, helping TSU to the regional finals, then moved West, where she was an assistant for Steve Lucas at Boise State for three seasons.  She has also been involved with the Les Bois United Soccer Club for the past five years, while serving as a head coach in the Idaho Olympic Development Program.  Taylor has received her USSF "B" Coaching License.

MEN’S SOCCER (1-1): Coyotes continue non-conference slate with home match Saturday vs. Whitman

LAST WEEK: at Northwest Nazarene (L 4-3 OT), vs. Great Falls (W 1-0)

COMING UP: vs. Whitman, Saturday, 11 a.m.

SEASON TICKETS: Single-person or family season tickets will be available for all College of Idaho men’s and women’s soccer matches, Single-person season tickets are $30, while a family pass is $60 – which will get fans into the remaining 15 C of I games this fall.

COYOTES OPEN SEASON WITH SPLIT: After just ten days of preseason training, The College of Idaho men’s soccer team began the 2008 season in earnest, playing a pair of matches in the Treasure Valley.  A 4-3 overtime loss at Northwest Nazarene last Thursday allowed the Yotes to see which areas needed work – which were much improved on Sunday in a 1-0 victory at home against Great Falls.  “We made some mistakes against NNU,” said head coach Brian Smith.”  However, I felt that we were able to work on different combinations against Great Falls that will help us in the future.”  It marks the second-straight season that the Yotes have opened the year 1-1.

BAUTISTA NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK: College of Idaho forward Antonio Bautista (Homedale, Idaho / Homedale HS) was named today the Cascade Conference Offensive Player of the Week, announced by the league office in Portland, Ore.  The junior assisted on two of the three C of I goals in a 4-3 loss to Northwest Nazarene on Thursday, then scored the game-winning tally in a 1-0 victory over Great Falls on Sunday afternoon.  It marks the second time in his career that Bautista has earned the honor.

MURATA SOLID: Two-time All-Cascade Conference selection Kazuki Murata (Tokyo, Japan / International Secondary Inst.) opened up his season in style – scoring a goal and an assist in the loss at NNU, followed up with an assist in the win over Great Falls.  “I thought that Kazuki was the best player on the field on Thursday,” said Smith.  “He really played a great game, and added a key assist to help us to the win on Sunday.”

REYNOLDS STELLAR IN SHUTOUT: After a couple of mistakes against NNU, freshman goalkeeper Aaron Reynolds (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS) showed why he was tabbed the starter in 2008 in the 1-0 victory over Great Falls.  Reynolds made a pair of leaping saves against UGF, including a point-blank shot early in the second half to preserve the shutout.

NEW PLAYERS MAKE DEBUT: Along with Aaron Reynolds, five other C of I players made their Coyote debuts last week –Travis Newbold (Meridian, Idaho / Meridian HS), James Collet (Pocatello, Idaho / Pocatello HS), and Brian Griffiths (Boise, Idaho / Walla Walla CC) each played in both matches, while Spencer Ward (Kent, Wash. / Kentwood HS) and Brad Byers (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS) each played in one.

WHITMAN COMING TO TOWN: The three-game homestand continues on Saturday morning for the Yotes, as they play host to Whitman at Symms Field.  The Missionaries (1-0-2) were picked to finish third in the Division III Northwest Conference and have gotten off to a great start in 2008 – playing both Westminster and Northwest Nazarene to draws, while notching a 1-0 decision over Dixie State.  Whitman is paced by All-NWC striker Stephen Phillips, who scored 12 goals last season, and All-NWC keeper Brett Axelrod – two of 11 seniors on the team.  The Yotes defeated Whitman, 1-0, last season, and hold a 8-5-1 all-time series edge.

CCC PRESEASON POLLS: The C of I was the unanimous selection to win the South Division as the 2008 Cascade Conference Men's Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll was released in August.  The Coyotes, coming off a third-place finish last season and an 11-6-1 overall record, claimed the all nine first-place votes in their division - as the CCC splits into a North-South arrangement for the first time this season.  Joining The C of I in the South Division are second-place Corban, followed by Cascade, Northwest Christian, and Oregon Tech.  The North was led by defending loop champion, Concordia, followed by Warner Pacific, Northwest, and Evergreen State.  The first official Cascade Conference rater ranking was released as well, with Concordia taking the top spot, followed by Warner Pacific, the Yotes, Northwest, and Evergreen State – with Concordia ranked No. 24 in the initial NAIA poll and Warner Pacific receiving votes.

GAME RECAP – NORTHWEST NAZARENE 4, C OF I 3:  Jose Oregon headed home an Alex Mangeac cross in the first minute of overtime, as the Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team made a triumphant return to intercollegiate play with a 4-3 victory over The C of I last Thursday in Nampa.  The Crusaders, who disbanded their team following the 2002 season, rallied in the final two minutes of regulation to tie the game - as Mangeac bent a free kick from 25-yards out around the Coyote wall and into the right corner of the net.  The Yotes, who lost for the first time against their Canyon County rivals in ten years, jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, getting an Emir Kobic (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) goal off a nice combination from Kazuki Murata and Antonio Bautista in the 30th minute, with Bautista feeding Murata for a goal in the 35th minute to give the visitors a two-goal advantage.  However, The C of I ran out of gas in the final three minutes of the period, as Oregon flicked home a goal in the 43rd minute, followed by a Theron Fereday goal off a deflection a minute later to tie the score.  The Coyotes took a 3-2 advantage early in the second half on a Garga Caserta (Aracatuba, Brazil / North Idaho CC) unassisted goal, setting up the NNU heroics.  Though corner kicks were even at 4-4, NNU had a 22-12 edge in total shots.

GAME RECAP – C OF I 1, GREAT FALLS 0: Antonio Bautista scored the lone goal in the 18th minute, as The C of I opened their home season with a 1-0 victory over the University of Great Falls Sunday at Symms Field.  Bautista took a long through-ball from Kazuki Murata and blasted a right-footed shot to the far post, beating keeper Zach Johnson for the winner.   UGF held a 13-8 edge in shots, including eight on goal, but C of I keeper Aaron Reynolds was up to the task, including a point-blank save of a Kantey Locoh shot inside the six-yard mark in the 51st minute and a diving stop of a Chris Worthen drive in the 69th.   The Yotes had their chances as well, as a first half free kick by Mauricio Both (Cacheoira de Sul, Brazil / Nampa HS) clanged off the crossbar, a Murata drive in the second half was cleared off the goal line by the Argonauts defense midway through the second half, and Garga Caserta hit the right post late in the contest.

ABOUT THE COACH: Brian Smith (5th year, 42-26-3) is in his fifth season as head coach of The C of I men's soccer team.  In his first season two seasons, the Coyotes narrowly missed a spot in the NAIA Region I Tournament, despite a second and third-place finish in the Cascade Conference standings.  In 2006, however, the Yotes claimed their first CCC title since 2001 and advanced to the regional semifinals.  For his efforts, the Coyote skipper was named CCC Coach of the Year.  Last season, the Yotes missed out on the postseason by one game.  Smith, who helped the Coyotes to a 35-21-1 record as a player for longtime coach, John Calpin, from 1990-93, returned to his alma mater in 2004 after a successful high school coaching career in the Treasure Valley.  He coached the Timberline High School boys’ team for three years, before taking over the THS girls’ program in 2002 – earning Idaho State Coach-of-the-Year honors in 2001 and Southern Idaho Conference Coach-of-the-Year honors in 2003. After earning All-District honors as a player and graduating from The C of I with a degree in political science in 1994, Smith has assisted the Coyote program along with serving as a coach with the Boise National Soccer Club during the past decade.

CROSS COUNTRY: Coyotes set to open up season at NNU’s Roger Curran Invitational

LAST WEEK: Purple and White Intrasquad Race

COMING UP: at Roger Curran Invitational, Saturday, West Park, Nampa – Women’s 4,000-meters at 12:45 p.m., Men’s 6,000-meters at 1:25 p.m.

YOTES RUN WELL IN INTRASQUAD MEET: After a week of vigorous training, The College of Idaho cross country teams raced each other in the annual Purple and White Intrasquad race on the Caldwell campus last Friday night – impressing head coach, Pat McCurry.  On the women’s side, Stephanie Helm (Challis, Idaho / Challis HS) won the race for the second year in a row, while true freshman Kayloni Jones (Nine Mile Falls, Wash. / Lakeside HS) finished in second.  The skipper was also pleased with the racing of Chantel Varland (Meridian, Idaho / Mountain View HS), who placed fourth.  McCurry was ecstatic about the men’s team, as the top-five runners were separated by a mere 24 seconds – led by Kiprotich Langat (Nairobi, Kenya / United World College-USA).

IT STARTS FOR REAL SATURDAY: The Coyotes will open their season on Saturday, matching up with four other teams for the Roger Curran Invite in Nampa.  The women’s race is loaded – as Boise State will bring WAC Champion Breanna Sande to lead their contingent, while host Northwest Nazarene is ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Division II West Region poll and Eastern Oregon is ranked No. 13 in the NAIA national poll.  The men’s race should be solid as well – with Boise State, Eastern Oregon, and the Coyotes battling it out with NNU.  The women will race over a 4,000-meter course, while the men will race over a 6,000-meter course.

MORE ON THE ROGER CURRAN INVITE: Northwest Nazarene has expanded the former Fall Harrier Classic into the first major local cross country meet of the season – trying to rival the Bob Firman Invite at Eagle Island State Park later in the month.  The meet will feature high school races, junior high races, along with run/walk events for the community – all at West Park in Nampa.

PRESEASON NATIONAL POLL: For the first-time ever, The C of I women were ranked in the NAIA Top-25 Preseason Coaches Poll, as the Lady Yotes achieved the No. 11 spot in the polling released by the national office in Kansas City, Mo., on Thursday.  It marks the highest-ever ranking by the Coyotes in program history, eclipsing the No. 14 mark they notched midway through the 2007 season.  They are joined in the Top-25 by fellow CCC rival, Eastern Oregon (No. 13), with Corban receiving votes.  On the men's side, the Yotes received five voter points, or ranked No. 37 in the presesason poll.  Eastern Oregon (No. 8) and Concordia (No. 21) were the other two CCC teams in the poll.  Last season, the Coyote men were ranked No. 14 in the preseason poll.

ABOUT THE HEAD COACH: Pat McCurry is in his fifth season has the head coach for The C of I cross country and track programs.  In just four seasons (after the Coyote running programs were dormant for nearly 30 years), he has built the Coyote men and women into NAIA Top-25 programs, with the men's team achieving berths to the 2005 and 2007 NAIA Championships.  Both programs have also had at-large runners at nationals each of the first four seasons.  He has also coached three NAIA All-Americans, and numerous All-Cascade Conference and All-NAIA Region I competitors.  A native of Boise and graduate of Bishop Kelly High, McCurry came to C of I after serving as the assistant coach at Eastern Oregon University, his alma mater, for two years.  He helped the Mountaineer men achieve a No. 1 ranking in the 2003 NAIA preseason poll.  As a head coach, he led North Powder High to a track and field state championship.  He also competes at a high-level post-collegiately, running for the Nike-Portland Track and Eastside Club, having won the 2005 Race to Robie Creek and the City of Trees marathon.  McCurry and his wife Andrija live in Caldwell.
