VOLLEYBALL (9-1, 6-0): No. 7 ranked Lady Yotes put long win streak vs. Eastern Oregon on the line Friday night

LAST WEEK: at Warner Pacific (W 3-0), at Concordia (W 3-0)

COMING UP: at Eastern Oregon, Friday, 7 p.m. (PT); at Northwest Nazarene, Tuesday, 7 p.m.

LADY YOTES EQUAL HIGHEST REGULAR SEASON RANKING: The College of Idaho volleyball team equaled their highest regular-season national ranking in program history today, as the Lady Yotes climbed one spot to No. 7 in the NAIA Top-25 Coaches Poll, released Tuesday afternoon by the national office in Kansas City, Mo.  The Lady Yotes picked up lopsided weekend wins at Warner Pacific and Concordia (Ore.), extending their win streak to nine matches - with their lone loss to second-ranked and unbeaten Concordia-Irvine in five sets.  The C of I has a pair of wins over teams in the Top-20 - a victory at No. 11 Lewis-Clark State and a home win over No. 16 Southern Oregon.  It is the second time that the Yotes have been ranked No. 7 - the last time on Oct. 31, 2007, while the team has been ranked No. 8 on eight different occasions, including last week.  The highest ranking in program history was at No. 6 during the 2007 preseason poll.  Defending national champion Fresno Pacific is ranked No. 1, followed by Concordia-Irvine, Cal Baptist, Columbia (Mo.), Georgetown (Ky.), Northwestern (Iowa), and the Lady Yotes.  The C of I was atop the Cascade Conference weekly rankings, followed by Southern Oregon, Eastern Oregon, Concordia, and Warner Pacific.

MACHUREK NAMED SETTER OF THE WEEK: Setter Madie Machurek (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) was named CCC Setter of the Week, announced Monday afternoon by the league office in Portland, Ore.  The junior had a banner weekend in helping the Lady Yotes extend their winning streak to nine with road wins over Warner Pacific and Concordia.  Machurek, running a 5-1 system for the first time this season, had 26 assists, seven digs, and two aces in the win at WP, then followed with a dominating 34 assist, nine dig night against Concordia.  It was the second time this season that she has won the award – joining both Naomi Reimer (Killarney, Man. / Killarney SS) and Whitney Owen (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS) as two-time award recipients in 2009.

OUTSIDES HAVE BIG WEEKEND IN PORTLAND: Helping the Lady Yotes to their lopsided wins in the Rose City last weekend were big nights from their outside hitters.  Kathryn Ely (La Grande, Ore. / La Grande HS) recorded double-figure kills in both matches, recording 13 kills vs. Warner Pacific and 11 kills against Concordia.  Joining her was sophomore Ciciley Fox (Challis, Idaho / Challis HS), who had a career-high 12 kills in the win over CU.

I-84 CUP BATTLE FRIDAY NIGHT IN LA GRANDE: The Lady Yotes will put a 24-match CCC win streak on the line Friday night at Quinn Coliseum, as the meet a rejuvenated Eastern Oregon squad.  The Mountaineers (6-5, 4-2 CCC) have received votes in every NAIA Top-25 Poll this season, with four of their five losses coming to nationally-ranked teams – and have defeated No. 25 Westmont.  EOU is led by All-CCC standouts Grace Deboodt (3.5 k/s, 2.9 d/s) and Jessica Lea (2.5 k/s, 5.6 a/s, 2.4 d/s, 0.6 b/s) – and are coming off a trip to the 2008 CCC semifinals, where they were eliminated by the Lady Yotes.

EASTERN TRYING TO END THE STREAK: The Lady Yotes have had the upper hand on EOU over the last 12 seasons, racking up 29 consecutive victories against the Mountaineers.  In fact, the Yotes have not lost to Eastern since the 1996 season – including three victories last year.

REKINDLING THE CANYON COUNTY RIVALRY: Despite the schools being separated by just seven miles, Tuesday night marks the first meeting between the Coyotes and Northwest Nazarene since 2006 – and just the third meeting between the teams since 2003.  The NCAA Division II Crusaders (9-5) are led by All-America hitter Cammy Dranginis (3.0 k/s, 0.9 b/s) and All-GNAC selection Lindsey Grant (3.3 k/s, 3.7 d/s), while libero Haley Hevern (5.2 d/s) is very sharp defensively.  Fans should expect the Johnson Sports Center to be rocking – as NNU leads the GNAC in attendance, averaging nearly 500 fans per game.  The Lady Yotes have won five in a row against the Crusaders (including three five-set thrillers) – including their last two appearances in Nampa, and hold a slim 43-39 all-time series lead against NNU.

MENDIOLA CLOSING IN ON 200: With the victory on Saturday night at Concordia, head coach Liz Mendiola is well in reach of her next milestone victory – No. 200.  The ninth-year head coach has recorded 194 career wins and would join an elite group of coaches in The C of I 200-win club fraternity (Tim Mooney, Marty Holly, Shawn Humberger, Clem Parberry, Babe Brown, John Calpin).

RECORD BOOK: Four players currently are in the Top-10 in the Coyote career record book.  Leading the way is Kristin Henning (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS), who is No. 3 all-time with 430 blocks and No. 10 in kills (833), while Kathryn Ely ranks fourth all-time in kills (1,304) – needing just five spikes to move into third-place on the list.  Rounding out the list are the two setters, as Madie Machurek is No. 5 (1,479) and Naomi Reimer is No. 8 (1,168) in assists.

CCC LEADERS: As a team, the Lady Yotes lead the CCC in digs per set (17.2) and lowest opponent attack percentage (.084), ranking second in the league in attack percentage (.208), kills per set (12.7), blocks per set (2.4), and aces per set (1.8), ranking third in assists per set (11.7).  Individually, five different C of I players are among the CCC’s top-five, including three players leading the league in their respective categories.  Whitney Owen leads the loop in digs per set (5.7), Kristin Henning leads the league in blocks per set (1.3), with Marcella Hernandez (Torrance, Calif. / El Camino CC) leading the league in aces per set (0.7), while ranking fifth in blocks per set (0.9).  Madie Machurek is third in the CCC in assists per set (6.3), while Kathryn Ely sits in fifth-place in both attack percentage (.267) and kills per set (3.0).

GAME RECAP – C OF I 3, WARNER PACIFIC 0: Kathryn Ely recorded a match-high 13 kills, The C of I won their eighth-straight contest, stopping Warner Pacific, 25-15, 25-14, 25-18, Friday in Portland, Ore.  The Lady Yotes played without Naomi Reimer, who tweaked an ankle in last Saturday's five-set marathon against Southern Oregon.  However, the Yotes made a solid switch from a 6-2 to a 5-1 attack, with Madie Machurek leading the way with 26 assists.  All three sets were tight to the midway point, when solid serving by The C of I paid dividends.  Marcella Hernandez and Kristin Henning combined for 12 kills with just one hitting error, while Whitney Owen had 17 digs, with Courtney Combe (Nampa, Idaho / Skyview HS) adding 14.  The host Knights (5-5, 2-3) had three different players with five kills - but ended the match with more hitting errors than kills.

GAME RECAP – C OF I 3, CONCORDIA 0: The C of I ran their win streak to nine games with a convincing 25-12, 25-21, 25-9 victory at Concordia University Saturday night in Portland, Ore.  The Lady Yotes, playing without starting outside hitter/setter, Naomi Reimer, had four different players record at least seven kills, including a career-high 12 spikes from sophomore Ciciley Fox.  The C of I extended their CCC win streak to 24 matches - dating back to September of 2008.  Set 1 saw Kristin Henning torch the Cavaliers with five kills, as the Yotes jumped out to a 7-2 lead and were never threatened.  Set 2 was much closer, as the teams were tied at 15-15 - however, the Coyotes rode the back of Kathryn Ely, who had six kills in the period, including back-to-back spikes to end the set.  Set 3 was all C of I, sprinting out to a 17-3 lead, thanks to five kills each from Fox and Marcella Hernandez.  Ely had 12 kills in the victory, while Henning and Hernandez each had seven.  Madie Machurek was solid all night, leading all players with 34 assists and nine digs, with Whitney Owen recording ten digs.  CU got eight kills from McKenzie Rath and seven kills from Clair Thiel, while Raluca Dinca led all players with 20 digs.

ABOUT THE COACH: Liz Mendiola is in her ninth season as The C of I head volleyball coach.  During her first eight seasons at the helm, the Coyotes have advanced to seven consecutive Cascade Conference tournaments, four NAIA regional tournaments, and trips to the NAIA National Championships in 2005, 2006, and 2008.  Last season, the squad won their third-straight CCC title, claimed their third-straight CCC Tournament title, won their NAIA Tournament Opening Round match, and advanced to the NAIA Tournament Final Site in Sioux City, Iowa – with Mendiola earning her third-straight CCC Coach of the Year honors, while being ranked as high as No. 9 in the national poll.  During her career, she has amassed a record of 194-75, the most wins and highest winning percentage in school history.  In 2006, she led the Lady Yotes to their best season in program history, compiling a 35-4 record - earning CCC and NAIA Region I Coach of the Year honors.  The Yotes won their first CCC championship in 24 years, becoming just the second school to complete the league schedule without a loss.  The Coyotes also captured their second-straight CCC Tournament title, along with their second-straight NAIA Region I Tournament title, before placing ninth at the NAIA Championships – with that team setting a school-record with 22 straight wins.  Her 2009 club will take a 35-match CCC home win streak into the season.  Mendiola was an assistant for the Coyotes on two separate occasions – from 1995-96 and from 1999-2000, before elevating to head coach.  She has also coached club volleyball at Emmett High, for the Treasure Valley Volleyball Club, the Boise River Volleyball Club, and various camps in the Northwest.  A native of Jerome, Mendiola graduated from The C of I in 1996 with a degree in elementary education, and taught kindergarten in Nampa before becoming head coach in 2001. A two-year member of the Coyotes, Mendiola set school records for kills per game (4.86) in 1994, and holds the school mark for kills per game in a career (4.46).  She earned All-CCC honors following her senior season with the Yotes.  Mendiola is married to former Coyote baseball standout and current C of I softball coach Al Mendiola.  The Mendiola’s have two children, Aleah and Micah.

CROSS COUNTRY: No. 7 Lady Yotes, No. 25 Coyotes set for Bob Firman Invitational

COMING UP: at Bob Firman Invitational, Saturday, Eagle Island State Park – men’s 8,000-meters at 8:50 a.m.; women’s 5,000-meters at 9:25 a.m.

LAST WEEK: at Roger Curran Invite (9/12) – Men 2nd-place, Women 1st-place

LADY YOTES HIT UNCHARTED WATERS, MEN CRACK TOP-25: Both The College of Idaho men's and women's cross country teams were represented in the latest NAIA Top-25 Coaches Polls, released last Wednesday by the national office in Kansas City, Mo.  The Lady Yotes climbed one spot to No. 7 after a team win at the Roger Curran Invitational - including a victory over Boise State.  It marks the highest national ranking in the six-year history of the program.  Joining the Lady Yotes in the poll from the Cascade Conference is Concordia, which dropped three spots to No. 14, while both Northwest Christian and Eastern Oregon received votes.  Cal State-San Marcos claimed the top spot, followed by Biola, Cedarville, Simon Fraser, and Azusa Pacific.  On the men's side, the Yotes cracked the Top-25 for the first time this season at No. 25 after a solid second-place finish at the Curran Invite on Saturday.  Two other CCC schools - No. 6 Concordia and No. 9 Southern Oregon are in the poll, with Eastern Oregon receiving votes.  Malone (Ohio) holds down the top spot, followed by Aquinas (Mich.), Embry-Riddle (Fla.), Simon Fraser, and Concordia-Irvine.

KEEPING THE STREAK ALIVE: The Coyote men have now been ranked in the Top-25 for 17 consecutive regular-season national polls, dating back to the 2007 season.

CCC POLL: This week’s Cascade Conference poll saw the Lady Yotes remain at No. 1 – followed by Concordia, Eastern Oregon, Northwest Christian, and Southern Oregon, while the Coyote men are sitting at No. 2 – behind Southern Oregon, and ahead of Eastern Oregon, Concordia, and Warner Pacific.  The league poll is released each Monday morning.

RECAP OF ROGER CURRAN INVITE: Thanks to a trio of Top-10 finishes on the 4,000-meter course, the Lady Yotes claimed the team championship at the Roger Curran Invitational at West Park in Nampa on Sept. 12.  The Lady Yotes finished with 46 team points - six ahead of NCAA Division I program Boise State, and comfortably ahead of rivals Eastern Oregon and Northwest Nazarene.  Stephanie Helm (Challis, Idaho / Challis HS) led the way, placing second in a school record time of 14:23.83, while senior Molli Lee-Painter (Moscow, Idaho / Moscow HS) took eighth (15:12.09) and freshman Kaitlyn Gerard (Kimberly, Idaho / Kimberly HS) took tenth (15:17.38).  The Coyote men had a great team race, finishing second to BSU - as their first-through-fifth placers were separated by just 37 seconds. True freshman Andrew Hugill (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Coronado HS) was outstanding in his debut, placing sixth overall in 19:07.24 over the 6,000-meter course, with junior J.J. Burk (Bliss, Idaho / Bliss HS) placing tenth (19:16.37).

PURPLE AND WHITE RACE A SUCCESS: Last Saturday, the Coyotes welcomed back Alumni and friends to the campus for the annual Purple and White Intrasquad Race – with the men’s white squad (representing freshmen and alumni) and the women’s purple squad claiming the 2,000-meter race.

INAUGURAL IDAHO CUP: This weekend marks the beginning of a fall cross country tradition in the Gem State, as the Bob Firman Invitational hosts the Idaho Cup – a scoring race between Idaho’s collegiate squads.  Although the two teams from the North (Idaho and Lewis-Clark State) will not attend, the other four teams – Boise State, Idaho State, Northwest Nazarene, and The C of I will race the Eagle Island State Park course, along with Central Washington, Treasure Valley CC, and the women’s squad from Brigham Young.  The men’s race should be a battle between the D-I programs, while the women’s race should be dominated by BYU – however, the Lady Yotes should be in the mix for second with BSU and ISU.  Next season, all six Idaho schools are expected to converge on Moscow for a true Idaho Cup.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (5-1): Lady Yotes open up CCC play at Simplot Stadium vs. Evergreen State and Northwest

LAST WEEK: vs. Northwest Nazarene (W 4-0)

COMING UP: vs. Evergreen State, Friday, 2 p.m.; vs. Northwest, Saturday, 2 p.m.

SIMPLOT STADIUM A SUCCESS: A special thanks goes out to Mark Davis and the staff from the Caldwell Events Center for getting Simplot Stadium in playing shape for the 2009 soccer season, as The College of Idaho women’s soccer team makes their debut on their new pitch on Friday.  It will mark the first women’s soccer game played at the nearly 50-year-old stadium since Caldwell High moved their games to Syringa Middle School.

DIRECTIONS/ADMISSION PRICES: To get to Simplot Stadium, take Exit 29 off I-84 and head south.  Turn left on Cleveland Blvd., then left at Indiana Ave. (next signal), and the stadium will sit just ahead of you across Blaine Ave.  For non-C of I soccer season pass holders, admission prices are $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for students.

SQUAD EQUALS BEST START EVER: With a victory over Northwest Nazarene last Wednesday, the Lady Yotes moved to 5-1 on the season – equaling their best start in the 21-year history of the program.  In fact, ten previous C of I teams failed to win five games during an entire season – let alone the first six games of the season.

SHUTOUTS AND WINS RARE VS. NNU: The victory for the Lady Yotes over NNU was their first against the Crusaders since 2005 and just their third win over their Canyon County rivals in the last 19 meetings – however, was their second win in a row over the Crusaders in Caldwell (last game having been played in 2002).  It was their first shutout victory against NNU since a 1-0 victory on Sept. 6, 1997 – and their second biggest victory margin (largest coming in a 7-0 win over the Crusaders in 1989 – the first game between the two sides).

THREE STRAIGHT SHUTOUTS: The Lady Yotes have not allowed a goal in each of the last three games – the fourth time in the last five seasons that the team has achieved the feat.  In 2006 and 2008, The C of I blanked opponents in three-straight games, while the 2005 squad set a school record with four-straight shutouts, holding opponents without a goal scored for 444 consecutive minutes.  Sadie Hughes (Courtenay, B.C. / Vanier SS) has been in goal for all three games – lowering her goals against average to 0.75, while upping her career shutout tally to 12.

STILL ON THE CUSP OF THE TOP-25: Despite the torrid start, a pair of wins against Top-25 teams, and the lone loss a tough one-goal decision to a nationally-ranked foe, the Lady Yotes still remain outside the NAIA Top-25, as the latest poll was released this afternoon.  After earning 91 voter points last week – a new school record, The C of I actually lost ground in the balloting despite their lopsided win over an NCAA Division II school, earning 78 points, good enough for No. 27 in the ranking (second team listed in the Others Receiving Votes category).  Cascade Conference rival Concordia is ranked No. 5, while Carroll, who handed the Lady Yotes their lone loss, is No. 20.  In the CCC rankings, Concordia leads the way, followed by the Yotes, Oregon Tech, Corban, and Southern Oregon.  The CCC poll is released on Monday mornings, while the NAIA Top-25 is released each Tuesday afternoon during the season.

BALANCED SCORING: To say that the Lady Yotes have received offensive production across the board would be an understatement, as through six games, a total of ten different players have found the net – while 12 different players have recorded a goal or an assist.  Last season, only nine different players registered a goal during the 12-win campaign.  The team is averaging three goals a game – thanks to the efforts of leading scorers Jessica Ayala (Salinas, Calif. / Eagle HS) and Erika Mouritsen (Wellsville, Utah / Dixie State Coll.) – with Ayala recording three goals and six assists, while Mouritsen leads the squad with five goals.

EVERY GAME COUNTS FROM HERE ON OUT: With the CCC narrowing their postseason tournament for women’s soccer from six teams to four, every game the rest of the way is crucial for the Coyotes – who will be looking for their fourth-straight playoff appearance.  The ten-team league opens play this weekend as the Washington schools head east to take on the Yotes and Eastern Oregon, the Portland schools take on Northwest Christian and Corban, while Oregon Tech tangles with rival Southern Oregon.

ABOUT EVERGREEN: Up first this weekend is Evergreen State, a team that has played five of their six games this season on their home pitch.  The Geoducks (1-1-4) have been in every match, with their lone loss to No. 7 ranked Simon Fraser, but have just one win to their name, a 1-0 shutout of George Fox – as they have played to four 110 minute draws.  Emma Loftis (2 goals) leads ESC in scoring – as the Geoducks have mustered just five goals in 617 minutes of play this season.  Defensively, Evergreen has been outstanding, as Sonya Daisley-Harrison (0.77 GAA) has recorded three shutouts and 45 saves in the six games.  It is the 26th meeting between the programs, with the Geoducks holding a 15-8-2 all-time series edge.

ABOUT NORTHWEST: Saturday, it’s Northwest heading to Simplot Stadium, looking to build off a 13-0 rout of Bethany last weekend.  The Eagles (1-4-1) had been outscored 17-5 in their first five games prior to their win, but got their offense on track in a big way.  Leading NU offensively are Jordyn Wilson (3 goals, 2 assists), Yanet Candido (3 goals 1 assist), and Julia Johnson (3 goals), while two players share time in the net – Jessica Kane (2.67 GAA) and Jordan Holmes (3.00 GAA).  It is the fourth meeting between the teams, with the Lady Yotes holding a 1-0-2 all-time series edge.

CCC LEADERS: As a team, the Lady Yotes lead the CCC in goals per game (3.0), assists per game (2.3), and corner kicks per game (5.5), are second in points scored (50), assists (14), and shutouts (3), and are third in goals scored (18), and goals against average (1.00).  Individually, Jessica Ayala leads the league in four categories – total points (12), points per game (2.0), assists (6), and assists per game (1.0), ranking No. 3 in goals per game (0.5).  Erika Mouritsen leads the league in goals scored (5) and goals per game (0.8), ranking No. 3 in both points scored (11) and points per game (1.8).  Also in the league rankings is Sadie Hughes, who is second in shutouts (2) and is third in goals against average (0.75).

RECAP – C OF I 4, NORTHWEST NAZARENE 0: Erika Mouritsen scored a pair of goals, helping The C of I to a dominant performance, blanking rival Northwest Nazarene, 4-0, last Wednesday at Syringa Middle School.  Meeting their Canyon County rival in Caldwell for the first time in seven years, the Lady Yotes controlled the tempo for 90 minutes against the NCAA Division II school - not allowing a shot in the first half and recording a 16-3 shot edge.  Chelsea Heffner (Meridian, Idaho / Mountain View HS) got the Coyotes on the board in the 29th minute, taking a pass from Kayla Bigelow (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS) and driving a shot through the hands of NNU (2-2-3) keeper Tanya Zickefoose.  After having a shot in the opening five minutes clang off the right post and another turned away by Zickefoose in the 12th minute, Mouritsen struck the back of the net in the 32nd minute, collecting a loose ball of a defensive miscue by the Crusaders and scoring to make it 2-0.  NNU had their best opportunity of the game in the 61st minute, but Sarah Staropoli's free kick from 25 yards out missed to the left.  The Yotes would tack on a pair of second half goals to put the game away - Mouritsen scoring off a cross at the top of the six-yard box by Jamie Reichel (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS) in the 82nd minute, then getting a Kelly Hardegree-Ullman (Boise, Idaho / Mountain View HS) goal off a nifty through-ball by Jessica Ayala less than two minutes later.  Sadie Hughes needed to make just one save to record her third-consecutive shutout.

ABOUT THE COACH: Niki Taylor is in her fourth season as head coach of The C of I women's soccer program.  In her three seasons with the Coyotes, she has completely rebuilt the team into a contender, registering three-consecutive postseason appearances, an appearance in the 2007 Cascade Conference Tournament semifinals, and a spot in the 2008 CCC Tournament championship match.  For her efforts, Taylor was named 2008 CCC Coach of the Year.   She has an all-time record of 32-24-7, with the 32 wins the most by a women's soccer coach at The C of I, with her winning percentage of .564 tops in school history.  A graduate of Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., Taylor was an honorable mention all-conference player for the Bulldogs in 1999 and 2000, helping the squad to an NCAA Division II regional championships.  She went on to assist coach Mike Cannon during the 2001 season, helping TSU to the regional finals, then moved West, where she was an assistant for Steve Lucas at Boise State for three seasons. She has also been involved with the Les Bois United Soccer Club for the past six years, while serving as a head coach in the Idaho Olympic Development Program.  Taylor has received her USSF "B" Coaching License.

MEN’S SOCCER (2-2, 2-0): Coyotes put CCC record 14-game league win streak on line vs. Evergreen State and Northwest

COMING UP: vs. Evergreen State, Friday, 4 p.m.; vs. Northwest, Saturday, 4 p.m.

LAST WEEK: vs. Northwest Nazarene (L 1-0), vs. Oregon Tech (W 3-2)

SIMPLOT STADIUM A SUCCESS: A special thanks goes out to Mark Davis and the staff from the Caldwell Events Center for getting Simplot Stadium in playing shape for the 2009 soccer season, as the Yotes made their debut on their new pitch on Saturday.  It marked the first soccer game played at the nearly 50-year-old stadium since Caldwell High moved their games to Syringa Middle School – and the first C of I event (non-baseball) to be played there since the Coyotes eliminated their football program in the late 1970s.

CONFERENCE/NAIA POLL: The third Cascade Conference weekly poll was released on Monday afternoon, with the Coyotes rising one spot to No. 2, thanks to their win over Oregon Tech and a Warner Pacific loss to Concordia.  CU remains atop the ranking, followed by the Yotes, WP, and Evergreen State.  In this week’s NAIA poll, Concordia was the lone CCC team to receive votes.  The CCC poll is released each Monday morning, while the NAIA Top-25 is released on Tuesday afternoons throughout the regular season.

YOTES PUT WIN STREAK ON LINE: The Coyotes will put a 14-game CCC win streak on the line this weekend with a pair of home matches against Evergreen State and Northwest at Simplot Stadium.  The home streak is the longest in program history and is the second-longest in CCC history, behind a 17-game run by Concordia in 1999-00 – which was ended by a 6-1 Coyote victory in October of 2000.

FRESHMEN PAYING DIVIDENDS: With the rash of injuries that has plagued the Coyotes during the early season (as five players who were expected to provide key roles have been out of the line-up), it has been a group of first-year players that have stepped up to the plate.  Carlos Gomez (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS), affectionately called “Coach” by his teammates, leads the squad with three goals, while fellow freshman Matt Kelly (Klamath Falls, Ore. / Henley HS) has added two goals and an assist – including a game-winner.  Also in the bunch is Drew Smith (Boise, Idaho / Boise State U.), who in his first year of collegiate soccer has added a goal and an assist.

SHORING UP THE SECOND HALF: A key to look at this weekend for the Yotes is their play in the second half – as five of the six goals that have been allowed have been in the final 45 minutes of play.  The Yotes have statistically dominated their foes – 60-27 in total shots, 22-10 in corner kicks, however have only managed a 2-2 overall record.

IT’S NOW VEASY: If fans notice a different name wearing #13 for the Yotes, do not fear – it is just a name change.  Last week, freshman Zach Veasy (Boise, Idaho / Mountain View HS) legally changed his last name from Richardson to Veasy – which will be indicated on everything for the Coyotes (except the 2009 Soccer Guide, which went to print three days prior).

CCC STATISTICS: As a team, the Yotes lead the league in attendance this season – drawing over 250 fans per game, while they rank last in yellow cards drawn with three.  Individually, Carlos Gomez ranks second in the CCC in goals per game (0.8), third in goals scored (3), fourth in points per game (1.5), and fifth in total points (6).  Jesus Lopez (Nampa, Idaho / Skyview HS) is second in the league in shots per game (3.3) and assists (2), ranking fourth in assists per game (0.5), with Kazuki Murata (Tokyo, Japan / International Secondary Inst.) second in assists (2) and fourth in assists per game (0.5).

ABOUT EVERGREEN STATE: The Coyotes open the weekend against Evergreen State, who comes to town riding a two-game win streak.  The Geoducks (2-1-1, 2-0 CCC) lone loss game against D-II Western Washington, while recording one-goal wins over Northwest and Corban.  Evergreen is led by Mirza Memic (3 goals) and Corey Johnson (3 goals) on the offensive end – while a pair of keepers have split time for the Olympia, Wash. side.  It is the 23rd meeting between the teams, with the Yotes holding a 16-5-1 series edge, including four wins in a row.

ABOUT NORTHWEST: Saturday, the Yotes put an 18-match win streak on the line against Northwest, who head to Caldwell having recorded shutouts in three of their five matches this season.  The Eagles (2-1-2, 0-1) have blanked Linfield, Walla Walla, and Bethany – while scoring a combined 15 goals in their last two matches.  Twelve different players have scored at least one goal this season for NU, with Brandon Screen (3 goals, 2 assists) leading the club offensively, while keeper Kyle Wall (1.00 GAA) has been solid in goal.  It is the 28th meeting between the two teams, with the Yotes holding a commanding 25-2 series edge.

RECAP – NORTHWEST NAZARENE 1, C OF I 0: Renatto Brito converted a penalty kick in the 58th minute for the lone goal, as Northwest Nazarene upended The C of I, 1-0, in last Wednesday’s Canyon County clash at Syringa Middle School.  After controlling the play in the first half but not scoring a goal, the Crusaders took advantage of a foul in the far corner of the penalty box - with Brito driving home the winner past C of I keeper Aaron Reynolds (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS), to the far left corner of the net.  The Yotes would have a pair of good opportunities to tie the score, as Jesus Lopez struck the far post on a corner kick in the 60th minute, then Drew Smith was turned away by NNU keeper Alexander Engemann.  The C of I held a 9-5 edge in shots in the final 45 minutes and saw the Crusaders commit 14 fouls, but could not find the net.  Stellar play by the Coyote defense kept The C of I in the game - as Spencer Ward (Kent, Wash. / Kentwood HS) cleared a Benjamin Mangeac shot off the goal line in the 21st minute, with Reynolds deflecting a pair of NNU shots away from close range during the contest.

RECAP –  C OF I 3, OREGON TECH 2: Two goals in a 62 second span inside the final six minutes helped The C of I win their debut at Simplot Stadium, rallying to defeat Oregon Tech, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon.  OIT rallied from a one-goal deficit with back-to-back goals midway through the second half.  Antonio Jaimes split a double-team just outside the Coyote box and touched a through-ball to Jory Lum, who slotted home the tying goal in the 68th minute.  In the 80th minute, an Ian Van Der Zwan throw-in eluded traffic in the box, with Dallas Bille heading it into the goal for the 2-1 lead.  The Yotes would not be denied, as freshman Carlos Gomez collected a pass from Jesus Lopez at the top of the six-yard box and rammed a shot past Tech keeper Tommy Burden with five minutes to play.  A minute later, Kazuki Murata played a ball down the left side to Lopez, who chipped a ball over the OIT defense to freshman Matt Kelly - and the Klamath Falls native flicked home the winner against his hometown team.  Despite a decisive edge in shots, Burden kept the Yotes at bay most of the afternoon - recording eight saves, and held The C of I off the scoreboard until the 57th minute, when the keeper had to retreat to kick a ball off the goal line after a defensive lapse, with sophomore Drew Smith in position to tap home the opening goal of the game.

ABOUT THE COACH: Brian Smith is in his sixth season as head coach of The C of I men's soccer team.  During his tenure, the Coyotes have posted a 57-30-4 overall record, including Cascade Conference co-championships in 2006 and 2008, earning CCC Coach of the Year honors on both occasions.  His clubs have won at least nine games in each of his five years, while his 2008 squad became just the second CCC school to complete an unbeaten, untied conference slate and set a school record with 13 consecutive wins.  For his efforts, the Coyote skipper was named CCC Coach of the Year.  Smith, who helped the Coyotes to a 35-21-1 record as a player for longtime coach, John Calpin, from 1990-93, returned to his alma mater in 2004 after a successful high school coaching career in the Treasure Valley.  He coached the Timberline High School boys’ team for three years, before taking over the THS girls’ program in 2002 – earning Idaho State Coach-of-the-Year honors in 2001 and Southern Idaho Conference Coach-of-the-Year honors in 2003. After earning All-District honors as a player and graduating from The C of I with a degree in political science in 1994, Smith has assisted the Coyote program along with serving as a coach with the Boise National Soccer Club, the Les Bois United Soccer Club, and with the Idaho Olympic Development Program - currently serving as a team coach with Les Bois.  Smith is single and resides in Meridian.

GOLF: Men and Women impress at season-opening CCC event

COMING UP: at Northwest Nazarene (Hunters Point G.C.), Monday, 2 p.m.

LAST WEEK: at Warner Pacific Invitational (Men 2nd, Women 2nd)

COYOTE MEN IMPRESSIVE IN SEASON OPENER: The College of Idaho men’s golf team put a few years of struggles behind them last week with outstanding play at the first Cascade Conference event of the year, the Warner Pacific Invitational at Heron Lakes Golf Club in Portland, Ore.  The Yotes played 36-holes of solid team golf – with every scoring round in the 70s, finishing second overall, but tied with Concordia for first among CCC teams.  Sophomore Tyler Thurston (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) led the way with back-to-back 74s, finishing fourth overall – his highest finish as a collegian.  Freshmen Casey Dyck (McMinnville, Ore. / McMinnville HS) and Kasey Allen (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS), along with sophomore Jacob Reyes (Caldwell, Idaho / Caldwell HS) all finished in the Top-15 – helping the Yotes to a team score of 617.

LOWEST BACK TO BACK ROUNDS IN FIVE YEARS: The Yotes shot an opening round 309, backing it up with a final round 308 (as fall CCC events have been trimmed from 54 holes to 36 holes) – the first time since 2004 that the team has recorded two consecutive rounds below 310.

LADY YOTES SOLID SECOND, SET SCHOOL RECORD: Continuing their solid play in CCC events, The C of I women placed second at Heron Lakes – their sixth-straight second-place finish in a CCC event.  The Lady Yotes recorded a first-round 339 - their lowest team score in school history, two strokes better than the 341 they compiled at last season's CCC Championships.  Cecilia Garcia (Ontario, Ore. / Treasure Valley CC) finished seventh with a 24-over 168, which included an opening round 79.  Breanna Pace (Burley, Idaho / Burley HS) was eighth, Heidi Murphy (Caldwell, Idaho / Caldwell HS) ninth, and Jocie Cracroft (Soda Springs, Idaho / Soda Springs HS) placed tenth, as The C of I was 54 strokes ahead of third-place Northwest Christian.

GARCIA RECORDS ROUND IN 70s: With her opening round 79, Cecilia Garcia became the first Lady Yote to record a sub-80 round since 2004.  That season, current assistant coach Roslyn Folk recorded a 78 at the NAIA Region I Championships at the University of Idaho Golf Course.

TESTING OUT THE NEW COURSE: Monday, the Coyotes will play the first of two dual matches this season against Canyon County rival, Northwest Nazarene, competing for the first time on the area’s newest track, Hunters Point.  The over 7,000-yard links-style layout in Nampa will be a challenging experience for all of the players.  The Yotes and NNU men split a pair of duals last season, while the Lady Yotes use the day as practice, as the Crusaders do not field a women’s program.
