GENERAL ATHLETIC NEWS:

LISTEN TO WEEKLY RECAP ONLINE: Sick of having to scroll through the lengthy ‘Yote Notes each week.  The Albertson athletic department unveiled last week a new way to get news on the Coyotes - the Weekly Recap Show on the athletics website (www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/default.asp). The show, hosted by sports information director Mike Safford, will recap events from the past week, including game highlights, and preview the upcoming week.  Interviews with coaches and student-athletes will also be apart of the format, which will run between 15-and-30 minutes.  New shows will be posted each Monday afternoon.

BOOSTER CLUB MEETING SET: After consultation with the new Albertson College food service provider, Bon Appetite, the next Coyote Athletic Association meeting is scheduled for this Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in the Simplot Dining Hall.  All parents, fans, and friends are invited to attend the dinner, which costs $8.00 at the door.  Reservations can be made by calling the athletic department at 459-5512.

SPRING SPORTS DRAWING CLOSER: We are now less than a month away from the beginning of the spring sports season.  The baseball team is the first to kickoff its 2002 campaign on Feb. 15, with the softball team playing its inaugural game in San Diego against Point Loma Nazarene on Feb. 19, and the women’s tennis team opens at Lewis-Clark State on March 9.

MEN’S BASKETBALL:   16-8, 6-4 in CCC

LAST WEEK’S RESULTS: Beat No. 20 Western Baptist (89-85), beat Concordia (80-73)

THIS WEEK: at Eastern Oregon, Tuesday, 8:30 p.m. (MST); host No. 11 Evergreen, Friday, 7:30 p.m.; host Northwest, Saturday, 7:30 p.m.

‘YOTES OFF THE SHNIDE: The time was now for the Albertson men’s basketball team as it continued its five-game road trip through the Cascade Conference, after beginning the swing with a goose-egg in the southern reaches of Oregon.  The ‘Yotes said sayonara to its season-high three-game losing skid with a pair of impressive road victories at Western Baptist and Concordia.  The wins, coupled with timely losses by Oregon Tech and Warner Pacific, have vaulted Albertson into a tie for fourth-place, and a game out of second – with eight games remaining.

COACH MATTY’S “D” WORKS: For the last few weeks, assistant Garry Matlock has been spending countless hours trying to break the ‘Yotes out of its defensive funk.  After allowing Western Baptist to shoot 59-percent in the first half of Friday’s game, Albertson put the clamps on the rest of the weekend.  Over the next three halves, the Coyotes picked up the defensive pressure, and limited their opponents to just 33-of-100 shooting.

BIG COMEBACK AT WESTERN: Things looked bleak early in the second half at Western Baptist, ranked No. 20 in the NAIA Division II.  The ‘Yotes fell behind 66-51 with 13:29 remaining.  However, following a timeout, the Coyotes of old emerged for the first time in two weeks.  What transpired was a 17-2 run, capped by a Neal Robertson (Richland, Wash) trey to pull even, and clutch baseline runner from Tennison Tripple (Pocatello) with a minute remaining, giving Albertson the season sweep of the Warriors.

SHAW OUT AGAIN: Another unfortunate turn of events in the never-ending saga of Ty Shaw (Nampa).  The senior, who made a miraculous return last week after tearing the ACL in his right knee, injured the LCL in the same knee on Friday night.  Shaw, who was inserted into the starting line-up at Western, blocked a shot on the play midway through the first half, but landed awkwardly on the knee.  The All-American had scored five points, grabbed four rebounds, and blocked two shots before the injury.  Shaw will be evaluated by the Albertson medical staff on Monday.

PERSEVERENCE KEY AT CONCORDIA: The following night, the ‘Yotes broke a string of seven consecutive games of halftime deficits by jumping out of the gates early in the win over Concordia.  Fueled by 17 first half Neal Robertson points, Albertson took a 40-31 lead at the break.  The Cavs turned up the defensive heat, rallying to 57-55 midway through the second stanza, but Kris Cox (Provo, Utah) nailed a trey, and followed it with a four-point play, extending the lead back to nine – leading the ‘Yotes to victory.

ROBERTSON OUT OF SLUMP: It is safe to say that Neal Robertson is back.  After missing 12 consecutive three-pointers over the past weekend, the senior stepped up to the plate, draining ten treys this weekend, leading the ‘Yotes on the road.  Robertson tallied a season-high 34 points in the win over Western, and added 28 more against Concordia – earning Cascade Conference Player-of-the-Week honors – the third different Coyote to do so this year. Robertson was also 18-for-18 from the foul line.

ANKLE LIMITS TRIPPLE: Shaw was not the only Coyote to go down with an injury.  Late in the first half against Concordia, Tennison Tripple went down with an ankle injury, following a drive to the basket in which he was called for a charge.  The senior’s ankle was swollen on Sunday and his availability for this week is up in the air.  Furthering the injuries, Kris Cox took a blow to the head late in the Concordia game and did not return.  Cox will play this week, as will a nice shiner on his right eye – from the blow.

MORE ON GREAT FOUL SHOOTING: The consistent stroke from the foul line for the ‘Yotes continued this week, as Albertson connected on 48-of-57 free throws, or 84-percent.  On the season, the Coyotes have hit over 76-percent of their charity tosses – which is among the top-five in the NAIA Division II.  Tennison Tripple extended his consecutive free throw streak to 46, just five off of Kade Wilson’s school-record of 51 set during the 1994-95 season, and just 14 away from the national record of 60, set by Dan Rough of Whitworth, five years ago.  Incidentally, Neal Robertson has built a nice streak as well, nailing 34 straight free throws.

FINALLY HOME (ALMOST): It will be exactly 20 days since the Coyotes have taken the floor for a home game when they return on Friday night, but before they do, they must make the jaunt up I-84 to meet pesky Eastern Oregon.  The Mountaineers (4-13, 1-9) are in the depths of a nine-game losing streak, including a 105-45 debacle at Gonzaga, ranked in the NCAA Division I’s Top-20.  Just as Concordia had been close in conference, so has Eastern, as the Mountaineers have kept eight of their ten CCC tight at halftime (with the exception of games with Western Baptist and Evergreen).  EOU is led by forward Trevor Exline (12.2 ppg), but the squad ranks at the bottom of the conference in 12-of-18 team categories.  Albertson has won two straight against the Mountaineers, and 38-of-44, but dropped last year’s battle in La Grande.  The ‘Yotes go from the cellar-dweller to the top-dog on Friday, as Albertson returns to the Activities Center, trying to end an Evergreen 11-game win streak.  The Geoducks (16-5, 10-1) currently are ranked No. 11 in the NAIA Division II, their first-ever national ranking in the five-year history of their program, and have a two-game lead in the conference race.  The potent trio of Quincy Wilder (CCC best 22.2 ppg), All-American Andre Stewart (19.2 ppg), and Mike Parker (16.8) have ran roughshod through the CCC.  Evergreen clammed up the ‘Yotes down the stretch earlier in the year, stopping Albertson, 89-82.  Despite the loss, the Coyotes hold a 3-2 series advantage, including 18 and 19 point wins in Caldwell.  The weekend and mini two-game homestand ends with a Saturday date with Northwest.  The Eagles (2-9, 5-17) have fallen on hard times, losing nine of their last ten games – despite holding second half leads in more than half of the games (including their 89-75 loss to Albertson).  Post Dan Schneider (13.5 ppg) and forward Tyrone Ellis (12.7 ppg, 10.0 rpg) are a potent tandem.  The Coyotes have never lost to Northwest in Caldwell and hold a 7-2 advantage all-time over the Eagles.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Team - Scoring Average (82.2 3rd in CCC), Scoring Defense (76.8 – 6th), Field Goal Percentage (.465 - 6th), Three-Point Percentage (.382 – 2nd), Free Throw Percentage (.763 – 1st), Rebounds (34.3 – 5th), Rebound Margin –2.6 – 6th), Turnovers (12.9 – 1st).  Individual: Scoring Average (Neal Robertson– 16.9), Field Goal Percentage (Mike Homik (Hamilton, N.Z.) - .596), Three-Point Percentage (Jon Thomas (Nampa) - .481), Free Throw Percentage (Tennison Tripple – 45-of-45, 1.000), Rebound Average (Eric Hare (San Miguel de Alleude, Mexico) – 6.8), Assists (Kris Cox - 74), Steals (Kris Cox - 39), Blocked Shots (Mike Homik - 28).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL:     13-7, 6-2 in CCC

LAST WEEK’S RESULTS: lost at Concordia (69-64), defeated Cascade (70-42)

THIS WEEK: at Northwest, Friday, 8:30 p.m. (MST); at Evergreen, Saturday, 8:30 p.m. (MST)

LADY ‘YOTES EARN SPLIT, TIED FOR SECOND: It was a good weekend for the Albertson women’s basketball team, as the Coyotes came within four minutes of a rare Cascade Conference road sweep, but settled for a split in the Portland area.  Albertson sits in a three-way tie for second-place, knotted up with Concordia and Western Baptist, just one-game back of front-running Eastern Oregon.  The top-six teams advance to the CCC postseason tournament, with the top-two seeds earning first-round byes.

ALMOST JUST ISN’T ENOUGH AT CONCORDIA: On the hardwood, as in any sport, one must play offense and defense to win.  This was never more evident than Friday night at Concordia in Albertson’s 69-64 loss to Concordia.  The Lady ‘Yotes shot a conference season-best 52-percent from the floor, but turned the ball over 32 times, turning the tides.  Albertson led 59-58 late in the game, but turnovers allowed Cavalier post Amanda Tweedy to score six straight points, giving the hosts the edge they needed.  Kristen Bailey (Fountain Green, Utah) put on another outstanding performance, scoring a career-high 25 points, to go along with 12 rebounds and three more blocks.

CASCADE WAS THE TONIC: The Albertson women's basketball team held Cascade College to just one field goal over a 13 minute stretch to pull away and defeat the Thunderbirds, 70-42, on Saturday night.  Trailing 24-15 midway through the first half, Albertson finished the half on a 19-2 run, keyed by eight points from freshman Andra Peterson (Boise).  The Lady 'Yotes then came out hot in the second half, scoring the first 11 points and were never headed.  Heidi Goicoechea (Burley) hit three second half treys en route to a 17 point night to lead all scorers.  Peterson added 12 points, and Jan Marchiano (Martinez, Calif.) came off the bench to score 11 points and grab seven rebounds.

THACKER OUT INDEFINITELY: The Lady ‘Yotes were dealt a tough blow early last week, as point-guard Krystal Thacker (Elko, Nev.) had to undergo emergency gall bladder surgery.  The surgery was a success, however, the availability of the sophomore in uncertain.  Another sophomore, Carley Williams (Boise), took over the reins against Cascade, scoring five points and pulling down four rebounds in a career-high 35 minutes of action.

MORE ON THE INJURY BUG: The walking-wounded include senior Jeannie Thompson (Everett, Wash.), who rolled her left ankle in the first half of Saturday’s win over Cascade.  Thompson, who missed three games earlier in the season with a stress fracture in her foot, missed the final 27 minutes of the contest.  Heidi Goicoechea has also been battling a sore back for recent weeks, although the pain has not forced her to miss action.  Both should be in the line-up this weekend when the Coyotes travel to the Seattle area.

UPDATING THE RECORD BOOKS: The records are falling by the wayside fast this season.  Two team game records (three-point attempts, rebounds) and three individual game records (three-point attempts, rebounds, blocks) have already been eclipsed, with more on the way.  Jeannie Thompson established a new career record when she started the 92nd game of her career on Friday, passing Linsi Sloan for the top spot.  Thompson also moved into third-place on the all-time games played list with 110 and on the rebound list with 616, just 52 boards shy of Alyson Pincock’s school record.  Kristen Bailey added to her school record for blocked shots in a season with six more, giving her 52 for the year.  Bailey is just nine behind Sloan’s career record of 61.

SNOW IN SEATTLE?: Just as the Treasure Valley received a winter storm on Sunday, Western Washington is dealing with a similar threat.  It isn’t rain falling from the skies in Seattle this morning, but snow – something that has occurred just three times in the lowlands in the past two years.  It is here that the Lady ‘Yotes embark for their weekend, not to drink java and eat seafood, but to try and win two more CCC battles on the road.  Friday, Albertson heads to Northwest College, looking for a better effort than what happened in the Northwest Pavilion last year.  The Eagles (4-17, 2-5) defeated the Coyotes 73-63 on their home floor last year, but Albertson has already defeated the 2001-02 team once, a 63-52 win just nine days ago.  In that game, the Lady ‘Yotes built a 22-point second half lead and coasted to the win.  The Eagles have received production lately from Kim Haley (7.3 ppg), who scored 15 against the Coyotes, and followed it up with a 20 point night in a 72-55 win at Evergreen.  Northwest has went 2-2 in its last four games after dropping 15 straight during November and December.  Saturday night, Albertson heads to some shaky ground.  Shaky, that is, referring to Olympia, where a 6.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the campus of The Evergreen State College last February.  The Geoducks (2-20, 0-8), who have played shaky at-best for the majority of the 2001-02 season, broke out of a 12-game losing streak yesterday – stopping Walla Walla College 75-31 – the biggest victory margin in school history.  Incidentally, both of the Geoducks wins have come against the NCCAA Wolves.  But just when you overlook Evergreen, remember that the Clams played tough for a half in the 88-56 loss to Albertson a weekend ago, and that was without guard Kristen Zompetti (8.4 ppg), who poured in 22 points in the win last night.  The Lady ‘Yotes have won all eight meetings with the Geoducks, including three in Olympia by an average of 28 points.

POSSIBLE INTERNET BROADCASTS?: The technology department at Albertson is putting together the finishing touches on a package that will allow the remaining home women’s basketball games to be broadcast live on the internet.  Stay tuned for more information, with a target date of Jan. 30 set for the first live feed.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Team - Scoring Average (67.6 - 5th in CCC), Scoring Defense (61.3 – 3rd), Field Goal Percentage (.406 - 4th), Three-Point Percentage (.299 - 4th), Free Throw Percentage (.682 - 5th), Rebounds (45.8 - 1st), Rebound Margin (+6.3 - 1st), Blocked Shots (83 - 1st), Turnovers (20.8 – 3rd).  Individual: Scoring Average (Jeannie Thompson – 14.4), Field Goal Percentage (Kristen Bailey - .479), Three-Point Percentage (Megan Henrichs (Preston) - .444), Free Throw Percentage (Heidi Goicoechea - .784), Rebound Average (Jeannie Thompson - 9.0), Assists (Krystal Thacker - 48), Steals (Krystal Thacker, Andra Peterson - 31), Blocked Shots (Kristen Bailey - 52).

ALPINE SKIING: (Men – 2nd in NWCSC, Women – T-2nd)

THIS WEEK: at Northwest Conference Qualifier #2, Saturday-Sunday, Mount Spokane, Wash.

BACK TO ACTION THIS WEEKEND: After a week layoff, the Coyotes head back to the slopes for the second round of competition of the year, at the Mount Spokane Ski and Snowboard Park in Washington state.  Last season the women’s team took home a first-place finish at this event.  14 inches of new snow has fallen within the last day at the resort, improving its base to 64 inches, with a 122-inch base at the summit.

SNOW REPORT: The winter storm that pummeled the Treasure Valley brought nine new inches of snow to the Coyotes home hill at Bogus Basin.  The resort now boasts a 63-64 inch base, operating at 100-percent.
