GENERAL ATHLETIC NEWS:

WEEKLY RECAP CHANGED TO HOTLINE: After consultation with many fans, the athletic department has changed a format on the website.  Instead of a 30-minute weekly internet show featuring Coyote athletics, a internet “hotline” has been established, giving up-to-date information on Coyote athletics.  Instead of listening for 30 minutes, fans can get the fill of Albertson sports in less than five.  Check it out at www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/default.asp

BIG BOOSTER CLUB TURNOUT: Special thanks to the 42 boosters that came to the first 2002 Coyote Athletic Association dinner last Wednesday.  The next meeting will be held in conjunction with the beginning of the spring sports season, along with the basketball playoffs.  A date will be selected by the end of this week.

SPRING SPORTS DRAWING CLOSER: We are now just two weeks away from the beginning of the spring sports season.  The baseball team is the first to kickoff its 2002 campaign on Feb. 15, with the softball team playing its inaugural game in San Diego against Point Loma Nazarene on Feb. 19, and the women’s tennis team opens at Lewis-Clark State on March 9.

MEN’S BASKETBALL:   18-9, 8-5 in CCC

LAST WEEK’S RESULTS: Beat Eastern Oregon (71-67), lost to No. 9 Evergreen (80-65), beat Northwest (71-56)

THIS WEEK: at Cascade, Friday, 8:30 p.m. (MST); at Warner Pacific, Saturday, 8:30 p.m. (MST)

COYOTES CLINCH PLAYOFF BERTH, NOW BATTLE FOR HOME DATES: By winning 2-of-3 games last week, the Albertson men’s basketball team has assured itself one of the eight berths in the Cascade Conference post-season tournament.  With that in hand, the ‘Yotes now look to secure as many home playoff games as possible.  The four highest seeds host opening round games, with the two remaining high seeds hosting the semifinals.

EVERGREEN WOMPS COYOTES: If anyone is not a believer that The Evergreen State College men’s basketball team is the tops in the Cascade Conference, there must be a problem.  The ninth-ranked Geoducks, playing without the CCC’s leading scorer Quincy Wilder, dominated the Coyotes on Friday, winning 80-65 in the Activities Center.  The ‘Yotes shot just 25-of-67 from the floor, their third-worst shooting performance of the year, as Evergreen won for the 13th consecutive time.

REWIND…ALBERTSON WINS DOOZEY IN LA GRANDE: Before the debacle against Evergreen, the ‘Yotes made their yearly exodus across the Baker Mountains on Tuesda, slip-sliding their way to face Eastern Oregon.  In a game that featured 27 lead changes and 12 ties, Albertson scored the final five points to win 71-67 – handing the Mountaineers their tenth-consecutive loss.  Kris Cox (Provo, Utah / BYU-Idaho) hit a runner in the lane with a minute left to give the ‘Yotes a 68-67 lead, and Neal Robertson (Richland, Wash. / Columbia Basin CC) hit 3-of-4 free throws in crunch time to salt away the win.  The victory avenged a 65-60 loss to Eastern in Quinn Coliseum last year.

ANOTHER LOSING STREAK TO TEN?: It isn’t often that one team can deal two different squads their tenth- consecutive loss in one week.  But that was the case for the ‘Yotes, as Albertson held Northwest College to just 18 second half points in a 71-56 victory over the slumping Eagles, Saturday night.  Northwest led 38-27 at the break, but shot 6-of-28 from the field in the second half.  Mike Homik (Hamilton, N.Z. / West Valley College) keyed a 25-5 second half Albertson run, scoring eight of his game-high 25 points for the victors.  The win also halted a two-game home losing streak by the Coyotes.

FRESHMAN EARNS MINUTES: Patience sometimes pays off.  After seeing just 26 minutes of action during the ‘Yotes first 24 games, true freshman Zach Rasmussen (Boise, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) surpassed that total in the three games this week.  Rasmussen played a season-high 15 minutes in both the Eastern Oregon and Evergreen games, hitting a key trey in the win at Eastern, and scoring six points and grabbing five rebounds in the loss to Evergreen.  “Zach doesn’t act like a typical freshman on the floor,” said head coach Mark Owen.  “He is someone who will do great things for this basketball team in the future.”

UNDER 70 FACTOR: Here’s one startling, yet very visible statistic for the Coyotes – Albertson has an 18-4 record when scoring 70 or more points.  However, when scoring under the 70 point mark, the ‘Yotes have lost all five decisions (Boise State, La Verne, twice to Southern Oregon, and Evergreen).

TRIPPLE RETURNS, THOMAS QUESTIONABLE, SHAW OUT: An up-and-down week for the health of the Coyotes.  After missing two and a half games, senior Tennison Tripple (Pocatello, Idaho / Lane CC) returned to the line-up against Northwest, scoring ten points in 20 minutes off the bench, a week after injuring an ankle at Concordia.  Guard Jon Thomas (Nampa, Idaho / Gem State Academy) had a rough week, battling a pesky head cold.  The bug limited the junior’s effectiveness, as Thomas managed to hit just 1-of-10 treys this week.  Forward Ty Shaw (Nampa, Idaho) will most likely not return from a series of devastating injuries to his left knee.  The senior All-American tore his ACL in the knee against Rocky Mountain in November, and tore his LCL in the same knee at Western Baptist, earlier in the month.

FOUL SHOOTING STILL KEY: The consistent stroke from the foul line for the ‘Yotes continued this week, as Albertson connected on 42-of-59 free throws, or 71-percent.  On the season, the Coyotes have hit just under 76-percent of their charity tosses – which is among the top-five in the NAIA Division II.  Tennison Tripple consecutive free throw streak is still at 46, just five off of Kade Wilson’s school-record of 51 set during the 1994-95 season, and just 14 away from the national record of 60, set by Dan Rough of Whitworth, five years ago.  Incidentally, Neal Robertson saw his free throw streak end at 36, after missing the front end of a two-shot foul at Eastern Oregon.

FINAL REGULAR SEASON ROAD TRIP: The Coyotes hit Southwest Airlines one final time during the regular season, heading back to Portland, Ore. for the second time in three weeks.  Friday, Albertson heads to Cascade College, for a rematch with the Thunderbirds (14-12, 5-7), who stopped the ‘Yotes 109-91 in Caldwell, earlier in the month.  Since the win, Cascade has dropped four of their last six CCC counters, including a tough 80-79 loss at Oregon Tech on Saturday.  Fruitland native Matt Evers (17.0 ppg, 7.7 rpg) has been outstanding for head coach Craig Moody, recording double-doubles in five of his last seven games.  Albertson will have to stop guard Will Walker (17.4 ppg), who torched the ‘Yotes for 30 points in the T-Birds win.  Albertson holds a 25-3 all-time record against Cascade.  Saturday, the team moseys down Glisan Street to Warner Pacific, looking for a season-sweep of the Knights (13-12, 6-6).  WPC has dropped three games in a row and 4-of-5, by an average of 19 points a game.  However the Knights are a very dangerous team, led by guard Andrew Twiss (18.2 ppg) – and have a 7-2 record inside Perry Gym.  The 77-71 win over Warner Pacific earlier in the year extended the Coyotes streak to ten-straight over the Knights, the longest winning streak for Albertson over any opponent.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Team - Scoring Average (80.7 4th in CCC), Scoring Defense (75.5 – 6th), Field Goal Percentage (.455 - 7th), Three-Point Percentage (.371 – 4th), Free Throw Percentage (.758 – 1st), Rebounds (35.0 – 4th), Rebound Margin –2.3 – 6th), Turnovers (12.8 – 1st).  Individual: Scoring Average (Neal Robertson– 17.5), Field Goal Percentage (Mike Homik - .586), Three-Point Percentage (Jon Thomas - .406), Free Throw Percentage (Tennison Tripple – 45-of-45, 1.000), Rebound Average (Eric Hare (San Miguel de Alleude, Mexico / West Valley College) – 6.7), Assists (Kris Cox - 89), Steals (Kris Cox - 41), Blocked Shots (Mike Homik - 31).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL:     15-7, 8-2 in CCC

LAST WEEK’S RESULTS: defeated Northwest (62-48), defeated Evergreen (67-47)

THIS WEEK: host Eastern Oregon, Wednesday, 7 p.m.; host Warner Pacific, Friday, 7 p.m.

WIN STREAK REACHES THREE, FIRST-PLACE ON THE LINE: The short-handed Lady ‘Yotes took care of business in Washington last weekend, picking up a pair of road wins, setting up a big battle Wednesday night with Eastern Oregon.  Albertson is tied with Western Baptist in second-place, a game behind Eastern.  Southern Oregon sits in fourth-place, with Concordia, ranked No. 25 in the NAIA, in fifth.

AND BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE LETTER “D”: Solid defense was the name of the game in the Lady ‘Yotes two wins in the Puget Sound area, which hit by a snowstorm this weekend in the form of the Purple & Gold.  Friday night, Albertson rallied from a 31-25 halftime deficit, holding Northwest College to 4-of-34 shooting in the second half, to win 62-48.  Sophomore guard Carley Williams (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS) scored a career-high 16 points, along with six assists and five rebounds in the win.  In Saturday’s 67-47 win over Evergreen, Albertson once again turned up the “D” – erasing a 30-28 second half deficit by holding the Geoducks to 8-of-30 shooting from the field.  Megan Henrichs (Preston, Idaho / Preston HS) led the Lady ‘Yotes with 21 points.  With the two solid defensive performances, Albertson now leads the Cascade Conference in scoring defense, holding their opponents to just 60 points a game.

BAILEY NAMED CONFERENCE PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK: It was a record setting weekend for center Kristen Bailey (Fountain Green, Utah / Snow CC) in the Lady ‘Yotes two wins, as she was named Cascade Conference women’s basketball Player-of-the-Week.  After scoring six points and corralling 16 rebounds at Northwest, the junior added a monster 12 point, 14 rebound, and six blocked shot performance at Evergreen.  The latter established a school record for blocked shots in a game, and left her just two blocks shy of breaking former Lady ‘Yote Linsi Sloan’s career record of 61 blocked shots, in just 22 games.  Bailey leads the loop with 60 blocks, along with her 9.4 rebound average, and has had 12 or more rebounds on seven occasions this season.

HOME COOKING: Plagued by an injured ankle and a stress fracture in her foot, guard Jeannie Thompson (Everett, Wash. / Everett HS) knew one thing would make the pain go away – going home.  That is exactly what she did last weekend – playing in her home state in front of family and friends. The senior did her part, scoring 15 points in both games last weekend, leading the Lady ‘Yotes to victory.  She finishes her collegiate career with a 7-1 record in Washington.  Thompson has established a new career record for games started in a career, going past Linsi Sloan two weeks ago, and now has started 94 games in her career.  She also moved into third-place on the all-time games played list with 111 and on the rebound list with 625, just 43 boards shy of Alyson Pincock’s school record.

NEWS ON THACKER: Contrary to what was reported in this column last week, guard Krystal Thacker (Elko, Nev. / BYU-Idaho) did not undergo emergency gall bladder surgery.  However, the sophomore was treated for an infection in her kidney, which has sidelined her for the last ten days.  According to head coach Reagan Rossi, a best-case scenario would have Thacker returning to the line-up on Friday against Warner Pacific.

BACK HOME: The Lady ‘Yotes finished their four-game road swing with a 3-1 record, and now have the chance to move into first-place in the CCC standings this week.  Wednesday, 18th-ranked Eastern Oregon heads into the valley, looking to maintain their slim one-game lead in the conference, and gunning for their first-ever sweep of Albertson.  The first-place Mountaineers (16-2, 9-1) also swept Northwest and Evergreen, and hope for a repeat of the 84-62 victory over the Lady ‘Yotes earlier in the month.  Brooke Sellards (18.3 ppg, 6.3 rpg) has been dominant this season, leading the CCC in scoring average, while three other players average at least nine points a game.  The Mountaineers, who are bringing a rooter-bus to Caldwell for the game, lead the conference in scoring at 74 points a game.  Prior to this season, Albertson had won 12-of-13 games over EOU.  Friday, CCC outsider Warner Pacific makes the trip the Activities Center.  The Knights (4-18, 1-7) have a scheduling nightmare, as the odd team out in the nine-team league.  With no travel partner, WPC has had to play the majority of its conference tilts on Tuesday’s, and will finish the season with a flourish – six games in two weeks.  Post Shawna Damon (13.9 ppg) leads the way for Katy Steding’s club, scoring 32 points in WPC’s lone conference win over Evergreen.  Albertson decimated the Knights, 66-41, in December and has won 4-of-5 meetings with the Portland school.

POSSIBLE INTERNET BROADCASTS?: The technology department at Albertson is putting together the finishing touches on a package that will allow the remaining home women’s basketball games to be broadcast live on the internet.  We hope to have a link available for the broadcast of the Jan. 30 home game against Eastern Oregon on the women’s basketball homepage.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Team - Scoring Average (67.3 - 5th in CCC), Scoring Defense (60.0 – 1st), Field Goal Percentage (.405 - 4th), Three-Point Percentage (.295 - 4th), Free Throw Percentage (.682 - 4th), Rebounds (46.2 - 1st), Rebound Margin (+6.7 - 1st), Blocked Shots (92 - 1st), Turnovers (20.7 – 3rd).  Individual: Scoring Average (Jeannie Thompson – 14.4), Field Goal Percentage (Kristen Bailey - .475), Three-Point Percentage (Megan Henrichs - .444), Free Throw Percentage (Heidi Goicoechea (Burley, Idaho / Burley HS) - .780), Rebound Average (Kristen Bailey - 9.4), Assists (Krystal Thacker - 48), Steals (Andra Peterson (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS) - 32), Blocked Shots (Kristen Bailey - 60).

ALPINE SKIING: (Men – 3rd in NWCSC, Women – 3rd)

LAST WEEK’S RESULTS: at Northwest Conference Qualifier #3 at Mount Spokane, Wash. – Men (7th and 4th place finishes in the slalom), Women (5th and 2nd place finishes in the slalom)

THIS WEEK: at Northwest Conference Qualifier #3, Saturday-Sunday, Mount Hood Meadows Ore.

‘YOTES STRUGGLE IN WHITE-OUT CONDITIONS: A severe winter storm made racing at the Mount Spokane Ski and Snowboard Bowl a difficult chore for the Coyote ski teams.  Saturday, both squads struggled in the terrain, the men limping home to a 7th-place finish, with the women finishing fifth.  Sunday was a brighter day for both squads, as the men rebounded, finishing fourth, with the women vaulting into second place.  Whitman College swept all four events on the weekend.  “Logan Thurber (Bennington, Vt.) and Kira Marsh (Salt Lake City, Utah) were brilliant for the women,” said head coach Ron Bonneau.

MAXWELL INJURED: The men’s team suffered a major blow on Sunday, as sophomore Tyler Maxwell (Bozeman, Mont.) was injured in the slalom race.  According to head coach Ron Bonneau, Maxwell cartwheeled down the mountain, following a nasty spill in a difficult part of the course.  He will be evaluated by doctors this week, but his availability for this weekend is unlikely.

OFF TO OREGON: The ski season is in full swing, as “Bonneau’s Bunch” travel to the Oregon Cascades for the third Northwest Conference Qualifier at Mount Hood Meadows.  Last weekend’s storm brought the base at the Meadows to 174 inches, and the January snowfall may break the all-time record for the month

SNOW REPORT AT BOGUS BASIN: No new snow, 66-67 inch base, operating at 85-percent.
