‘YOTE NOTES – October 14, 2001

MEN’S SOCCER         (6-2 Cascade Conference, 11-3 Overall)

LAST WEEK: 3-0  (Defeated Walla Walla, 13-1; Defeated Evergreen, 6-0; Defeated Northwest, 8-1)

MICHAELSON THE MAN OF THE HOUR: It is safe to say that this past week belonged to Coe Michaelson.  Not only was the junior from Wenatchee able to bring in former NFL great Christian Okoye to campus for a Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting, he backed it up with possibly the best week of soccer any player in Albertson history has had.  Michaelson recorded ten goals and three assists on the week, leading the ‘Yotes to a 3-0 mark, running their winning streak to six games.  He opened the week with a hat trick in the 13-1 pounding of Walla Walla, added a second hat trick in the shutout of Evergreen, and scored four more goals in the win over Northwest.  For the season, Michaelson has 17 goals and nine assists – the 17 goals ties him for the Cascade Conference lead, and he is second in assists.

MORE ON THE “WHITMAN” MASSACRE: The history in Walla Walla recounts the unfortunate events that happened to missionaries Marcus and Narcissa Whitman in the pioneer era.  Last Wednesday, the Walla Walla-Albertson match could rival that fateful afternoon.  The ‘Yotes set school records for goals in a game (13) and had the biggest victory margin (12), along with scoring a goal in the quickest amount of time (ten seconds).  Michaelson, Roger Aguliar, and Nick Zollinger each had hat tricks, while the team recorded 11 assists, just one off tying the fifth-place mark for single-game assists in NAIA history.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK:  Last Tuesday, freshman Jason Southward became the third different Albertson men’s soccer player to earn Cascade Conference and NAIA Region I Player of the Week.  The Wood River, Idaho native scored three goals and assisted on another as the ‘Yotes began the win streak with three wins.  He joins Michaelson and Jake Steele as recipients.

PLAYOFF PICTURE: With four Cascade Conference matches left, the ‘Yotes need just one win to secure a spot in the four-team post-season tournament.  Albertson sits alone in second place, just one game back of Concordia.  The squad has a chance this weekend to avenge its only two CCC losses when they travel to Cascade College on Friday and Concordia on Saturday.

STANDINGS: Concordia (7-1-0, 8-5-0, 21 points); Albertson (6-2-0, 18, 11-3-0, 18 points); Western Baptist (5-3-0, 7-5-1, 15 points); Cascade (3-4-1, 5-7-1, 10 points); Northwest (3-5-0, 5-7-0, 9 points); Warner Pacific (2-5-1, 5-8-1, 7 points); Evergreen (1-7-0, 3-11-0, 3 points)

WOMEN’S SOCCER  (3-5-2 Cascade Conference, 4-7-2 Overall)

LAST WEEK: 1-0-1 (Tied Eastern Oregon, 3-3; Defeated Eastern Oregon 4-2)

‘YOTES END WINLESS STREAK WITH WIN OVER EASTERN: Albertson had gone nearly four weeks without recording a victory, but that skid was put to rest on Sunday with a 4-2 victory on the road at Eastern Oregon.  Becky Robertson scored twice as the Lady ‘Yotes ended a five-match winless streak that dated back to September 22.  Adria Carley and Jessie Harwood also added goals for Albertson.  The two teams played to a 3-3 tie on Saturday, with Robertson scoring two more goals for the Coyotes, but the good-guys were unable to hold a 3-1 lead.

ROBERTSON’ S SEASON: The junior sits in second place in the Cascade Conference in goals scored with 13 and also in shots taken with 58.

PLAYOFF PICTURE: With the win, Albertson remains alive for one of the four berths in the Cascade Conference tournament.  The ‘Yotes are one-game back of Oregon Tech for the fourth and final spot in the tournament.  With games at both Concordia and Western Baptist, the top two teams in the conference on the docket, Albertson must defeat both Evergreen and Cascade on the road, and hope for OIT falter.

STANDINGS: Western Baptist (8-1-0, 8-6-0, 24 points); Concordia (7-1-0, 10-4-0, 21 points); Southern Oregon (6-2-1, 6-7-1, 19 points); Oregon Tech (4-4-1, 7-5-1, 13 points); Albertson (3-5-2, 4-7-2, 11 points); Evergreen (3-5-1, 4-8-2, 10 points); Cascade (2-8-0, 3-10-0, 6 points); Eastern Oregon (1-8-1, 1-12-1, 4 points)

VOLLEYBALL:  (7-4 Cascade Conference, 12-8 overall)

LAST WEEK: 0-2 (Lost at Southern Oregon in four games, Lost at Oregon Tech in four games)

TOUGH WEEK FOR THE ‘YOTES: The always dreaded 700 mile trek to Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech proved to be as troublesome as the wind in the Columbia River Gorge, as the ‘Yotes dropped both matches, extending their losing streak to three games.  In the SOU match, Albertson ran into the Kristina Matchett buzz-saw, as the league leader in kills exploded for 33 blasts at the Canyon County kids, setting a school-record.  The weary ‘Yotes struggled with their attack all weekend, hitting just .155 at Southern, and .090 at OIT.

GLAD-SAD WEEK FOR MERKEL: Over the weekend, setter Carly Merkel injured her ankle in the loss at Southern Oregon.  Although she gutted it out, observers at both SOU and OIT noticed the senior in pain.  There was no pain for Merkel on Tuesday, however, as she was named Cascade Conference Setter of the Week for the third consecutive week.  Joining her was Kristyn Price, who was named NAIA Region I Player of the Week after recording 93 kills at the Blocktoberfest Tournament, earning tournament MVP honors.

PLAYOFF PICTURE: Albertson needs just one win to secure a spot in the six-team Cascade Conference tournament in November.  With the two CCC losses this week, the ‘Yotes dropped from second to a tie for third in the standings – a game behind SOU for second, four games behind front-runner Concordia.

STANDINGS: Concordia (11-0, 16-3); Southern Oregon (8-3, 13-4); Oregon Tech (7-4, 11-5); Albertson (7-4, 12-8); Western Baptist (6-4, 11-7); Eastern Oregon (4-7, 7-12); Evergreen (3-7, 5-8); Northwest (3-8, 5-9); Warner Pacific (0-12, 1-15)

THIS WEEK: Host Concordia, 7 p.m.; Host Western Baptist, 7 p.m.
