General Athletics News:         Marty Holly to be inducted into NAIA Hall of Fame

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics announced Thursday that former Albertson College head men’s basketball coach Marty Holly is the newest inductee into the NAIA Hall of Fame.

“This tribute is in recognition of Holly exemplifying the highest ideals of intercollegiate athletics and fine moral character,” said NAIA President Steven B. Baker.

Holly will be inducted into the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball section of the Hall of Fame on March 10, 2002 at the NAIA Final Four Banquet in Point Lookout, Mo.

Throughout his coaching career, Holly amassed a career win-loss record of 424-156 during his 19 seasons with the ‘Yotes.  His 400th career win came in the first game of the 1999 NAIA Division II National Tournament when his Coyotes beat Bethany (Kan.) 78-73.  His winning percentage of .730 ranks him eighth all-time among NAIA coaches before he stepped down following the 1999-2000 season.

Holly had only one losing year at Albertson. Prior to the NAIA’s realignment away from district competition, Holly had created one of the most dominant programs in the history of NAIA District 2 and was inducted into the District 2 Hall of Fame in 1994.  He is, without question, the most successful basketball coach in the history of the school.

He guided the Coyotes to ten NAIA National Tournament appearances, along with six district titles throughout his tenure in Caldwell.  During the 1995-96, Holly led Albertson College to the top of NAIA Division II men's basketball.  Following years of unparalleled success, his team rolled to a 31-3 season record, including five straight wins at the national tournament, and claimed Albertson’s first-ever National Title with an 81-72 overtime win over Whitworth College (Wash.).

Aside from his coaching abilities, Holly has served for the past 21 years as athletic director.  During that time, the school has went from four to 12 intercollegiate sports, along with moving from Kirkpatrick Gymnasium to the state-of-the-art J.A. Albertson Activities Center in 1991.

The native of Torrance, Calif., is a 1969 graduate of Pepperdine University, and received his master’s degree in athletic administration from Idaho State University in 1980.

MEN’S SOCCER:        (8-2 Cascade Conference, 14-3 Overall)

LAST WEEK:       3-0 (defeated Northwest Nazarene (3-0), defeated Cascade (2-1), defeated Concordia (2-1)

‘YOTES ALONE IN FIRST: Albertson took care of business last week on the road, stopping fourth-place Cascade and then first-place Concordia, catapulting the ‘Yotes to the top of the Cascade Conference standings with two games left.  Against Cascade, Albertson scored a pair of first-half goals and rode the defense for the win.  It was a different story against Concordia, where senior Ryan Masingill converted a late penalty kick to send the ‘Yotes into the win column.

WIN STREAKS CONTINUE: With the 3-0 week, Albertson continued its overall dominance, extending its win streak to nine games.  More impressively is the ‘Yotes run on the road, where Albertson has won nine straight contests away from Symms Field.

MICHAELSON EARNS HONOR: For his ten goal, three assist performance a week ago, Coe Michaelson earned Cascade Conference and NAIA Region I Player-of-the-Week honors.   The junior has a shot to earn the award again, after scoring two goals and assisting on three others in Albertson’s three wins this week.

PLAYOFF QUESTIONS: With the wins this week, Albertson has assured itself a spot in the Cascade Conference Tournament, scheduled for Nov. 1 and 3.  With a victory over Warner Pacific on Friday, the ‘Yotes will clinch the regular season championship, and home-field advantage throughout the tournament.  The winner of the post-season tourney not only receives an automatic berth to regionals, but earns the right to host the tournament, slated for Nov. 9-10.

CONFERENCE STANDINGS: Albertson (8-2-0, 24 points, 14-3-0); Western Baptist (7-3-0, 21 points, 9-5-1); Concordia (7-3-0, 21 points, 8-7-0); Cascade (4-5-1, 13 points, 6-8-1); Warner Pacific (3-5-1, 10 points, 6-8-1); Northwest (3-6-0, 9 points, 4-8-0); Evergreen (1-9-0, 3 points, 3-13-0)

THIS WEEK’S SCHEDULE: ‘Yotes host Warner Pacific, Friday, 3 p.m.; host Western Baptist, Saturday, 1 p.m.

WOMEN’S SOCCER:           (3-7-2 Cascade Conference, 4-9-2 overall)

LAST WEEK:       0-2 (Lost 4-2 at Evergreen, Lost 5-1 at Concordia)

‘YOTES ALL BUT ELIMINATED FROM POSTSEASON PLAY: Albertson played hard, but could not manage a road victory this weekend, dimming the hopes for a playoff berth.  Despite Becky Robertson scoring three goals this weekend, the Lady ‘Yotes dropped a crucial 4-2 match with Evergreen and a 5-1 match with eighth-ranked Concordia.  With two games left, Albertson sits alone in sixth-place in the Conference with 11 points (three points for each win, one for a tie), five points behind Evergreen and Oregon Tech.  For Albertson to sneak into the postseason, they must defeat Cascade and Western Baptist on the road next week, hope Evergreen loses to Southern Oregon, OIT loses at Concordia, and the two schools to play to a tie on the regular season finale next Saturday.  That would create a three-way logjam at 17 points – but I am not sure if the tie-breaker would help the ‘Yotes cause…stay tuned.

ROBERTSON NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK: For her efforts from a week ago, Becky Robertson earned Cascade Conference Player-of-the-Week honors.  It was the first time all season an Albertson women’s soccer player has earned the nod from CCC sports information director Sam Ghrist.  Robertson again is up for the honor this week after scoring all three goals on the road, and now has 16 goals scored on the season.

CONFERENCE STANDINGS: Concordia (10-1-0, 30 points, 13-4-0); Western Baptist (10-1-0, 30 points, 10-7-0); Southern Oregon (7-3-1, 22 points, 7-7-1); Oregon Tech (5-5-1, 16 points, 8-6-1); Evergreen (5-6-1, 16 points, 6-9-2); Albertson (3-7-2, 11 points, 4-9-2); Eastern Oregon (1-10-1, 4 points, 1-14-1)

THIS WEEK’S SCHEDULE: At Western Baptist, Friday, 3 p.m.; at Cascade, Saturday, 1 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL             (8-5 Cascade Conference, 13-9 Overall)

LAST WEEK:       1-1 (lost to No. 8 Concordia (3-0); defeated Western Baptist (3-0)

‘YOTES END LOSING STREAK: The Albertson attack is back.  After dropping four consecutive matches, the Lady 'Yotes volleyball team rode 54 kills with just nine hitting errors en route to a three-game sweep of visiting Western Baptist Saturday night in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.  Both Katy Tipton and Kristyn Price recorded 15 kills as Albertson stopped the Warriors 30-25, 30-17, 30-22, to move into a fourth-place tie with Western in the Cascade Conference standings.  Tipton recorded kills on her first 11 attacks of the evening, with the Lady 'Yotes recording a .474 attack percentage on the night - the highest of the 2001 season.  Carly Merkel recorded 42 assists for Albertson (8-5, 13-9), who had dropped consecutive conference matches to Southern Oregon, Oregon Tech, and Concordia - the three teams above them in the CCC.  The Warriors (8-5, 13-8) were victimized by 23 hitting errors and eight Albertson service aces.  Outside hitter Liz Howe led Western with 14 kills, while setter Mandy McFadden had 32 assists.

MORE HONORS FOR TIPTON: Katy Tipton has a shot to earn her second CCC Player of the Week honor after an outstanding set of matches this week.  The junior recorded 28 kills and a .500 hitting percentage in the Lady ‘Yotes two matches.

PLAYOFF PICTURE: With the win over Western, Albertson pulled into a tie with the Warriors for the No. 4 berth to the six-team Cascade Conference tournament.  The Coyotes are currently a game behind both Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech, who are tied for second, behind Concordia.  Behind the top five teams, Eastern Oregon, Evergreen, and Northwest are battling for the final spot.  In the tournament, the top two teams earn a bye in the first round, with the Nos. 3-6 and Nos. 4-5 playing.  The top two finishers receive automatic berths to the NAIA Region I Tournament.

CONFERENCE STANDINGS: Concordia (13-0, 18-3); Southern Oregon (8-4, 13-6); Oregon Tech (8-4, 12-6); Albertson (8-5, 13-9); Western Baptist (8-5, 13-8); Evergreen (4-8, 6-9); Northwest (4-8, 6-9); Eastern Oregon (4-9, 7-14); Warner Pacific (0-14, 2-17)
