GENERAL ATHLETIC NEWS:

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL: To all of the Albertson College students, staff, boosters, and the ‘Yotes media outlets, the athletic department wishes each of you a Merry Christmas to you and your families.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: 7-4

LAST WEEK’S RESULTS: Lost at Southern Utah (89-77)

THIS WEEK’S GAMES: at Holiday Hoops Classic at Concordia (Calif.) - Friday vs. Bethany (Calif.), 1 p.m. (MST); Saturday vs. Southwestern (Kan.) or Concordia (Calif.), 1 or 3 p.m. (MST).

‘YOTES RALLY FALLS SHORT AGAINST SOUTHERN UTAH: A 15-3 run midway through the second half lifted Southern Utah to an 89-77 victory over a hot-shooting Albertson College squad in the Centrum Arena, Thursday night. The Lady 'Yotes, who shot a season-best 30-of-54 from the floor, cut a 17-point halftime deficit down to 54-50 with 12:42 left on a Heidi Goicoechea (Burley) trey, but the NCAA Division I Thunderbirds proved to much. Lindsey Hille nailed a three-pointer, and Meg Woolston converted a three-point play as Southern Utah ended a two-game losing streak, despite being out-rebounded 38-33 by the NAIA school.

THOMPSON OUT WITH INJURY: Albertson was without the services of leading scorer Jeannie Thompson (Everett, Wash.), who sat out Thursday's game with a stress fracture in her foot. She is questionable for this week’s games in California.

BIG NIGHT’S DESPITE LOSS: Five different Albertson players scored in double figures against Southern Utah, a member of the Mid-Continent Conference. Megan Henrichs (Preston) recorded her fourth double-double in five games, scoring 17 points and grabbing ten boards. Post Kristen Bailey (Fountain Green, Utah), from nearby Fountain Green, Utah, had ten points and ten rebounds. A trio of players, Krystal Thacker (Elko, Nev.), Jan Marchiano (Martinez, Calif.), and Goicoechea each scored 14 points, with freshman Andra Peterson (Boise) scoring eight points and pulling down ten rebounds in her first collegiate start.

AGAINST DIVISION I SCHOOLS: The Lady ‘Yotes are now 0-5 all-time against NCAA Division I schools, although the Southern Utah game was the closest of the bunch. Albertson has previously dropped a pair of games to the University of Wyoming and to the University of Utah.

TRIP TO CALIFORNIA ENDS ROAD SWING: After trips to Montana, Oregon, and Utah, the Lady ‘Yotes end their month-long road trip with a stop in Irvine, Calif. for the Holiday Hoop Classic, hosted by Concordia University. The squad opens up play Friday against Bethany (Calif.) (record unknown), who dropped 2-of-3 games in the Northwest last week - lost games at Concordia (Ore.) and Western Baptist, and defeated Multnomah Bible. On Saturday, Albertson will face either Southwestern College (4-5) of Kansas, or host Concordia (11-2).

CASCADE CONFERENCE STANDINGS: Western Baptist (2-0 CCC, 8-5 overall), Concordia (2-0, 8-5), Southern Oregon (2-0, 5-5), Albertson (1-0, 7-4), Eastern Oregon (0-0, 6-1), Cascade (0-1, 1-12), Northwest (0-2, 2-13), Warner Pacific (0-2, 1-11), Evergreen (0-2, 1-14).

MEN’S BASKETBALL: 12-4

LAST WEEK’S RESULTS: Defeated Concordia (89-77), defeated No. 11 Western Baptist (71-56)

THIS WEEK’S GAMES: at Northwest, Friday, 8:30 p.m. (MST), at Evergreen, Saturday, 8:30 p.m. (MST)

‘YOTES OFF TO 2-0 CASCADE CONFERENCE START: Albertson began its charge toward its second-consecutive NAIA Division II national tournament berth in impressive fashion, opening up Cascade Conference play with home victories over Concordia and Western Baptist. In Tuesday’s opener with Concordia, the ‘Yotes rallied from a 11-point halftime deficit to win. Albertson rattled off a 44-8 run after the Cavaliers scored the opening bucket of the second half. On Wednesday, Albertson rode the back of senior Mike Homik (Hamilton, N.Z.) to defeat Western Baptist, ranked No. 11 in the NAIA Division II. Homik scored ten points and grabbed 21 rebounds in the win.

MORE ON THE KIWI: For his efforts last week, Homik was selected as the Cascade Conference Player-of-the-Week for the first time in his career. The 21 rebounds was a career high and just three boards shy of the school-record, set by John Trezvant against Grand Canyon in the 1988 NAIA Tournament.

AGAINST RANKED FOLK: This season, Albertson is 3-0 against teams ranked in the NAIA Top-25. The ‘Yotes have victories over then No. 24 Robert Morris, then No. 18 Westminster, and Western Baptist.

PICTURE PERFECT: With a pair of free throws against Western Baptist, senior Tennison Tripple (Pocatello) has now converted 33 consecutive charity tosses. He is one of two players in the conference yet to miss a free throw (Moses Olson, Southern Oregon), and is 16 makes away from tying the school-record of 49 set by Kade Wilson.

NO SCHOOL, JUST CHRISTMAS AND HOOPS: Without having classes to think about, the ‘Yotes break for holiday cheer this week, before getting back to business this weekend with their first two road tests of the conference slate. Friday night, Albertson meets Northwest College (1-1, 5-9) in the always difficult Northwest Pavilion. The Eagles scored a big 59-57 upset win at Southern Oregon last Tuesday and look to improve on their 2-7 mark against the Coyotes. Northwest is led by forward Tyrone Ellis (15.8 ppg, 8.9 rpg), a Cascade Conference newcomer team member last year. On Saturday, the trek moves to Olympia, Wash. and Evergreen (1-1, 7-5), by far the most athletic team in the conference. The Geoducks pinned a 19-point loss on Southern Oregon, followed up by a school-record 116-60 victory at Multnomah Bible. All-American Andre Stewart (15.9 ppg) is one of three players averaging among the Top-15 in the CCC in scoring.

CONFERENCE STANDINGS: Oregon Tech (2-0, 11-3), Albertson (2-0, 12-4), Warner Pacific (1-0, 8-6), Western Baptist (1-1, 12-3), Evergreen (1-1, 7-5), Eastern Oregon (1-1, 4-5), Northwest (1-1, 5-9), Cascade (0-1, 8-6), Concordia (0-2, 4-8), Southern Oregon (0-2, 4-8)

ON THE AIR: All 32 regular season men’s basketball games can be heard live on 1490 KCID-AM with Mike Safford Jr. calling the play-by-play. Both games this weekend will be on the air, with the pregame show beginning at 8:15 p.m., with the tip-off at 8:30 p.m. A return to the internet for the broadcasts looms in the future, especially with the launch of a student-run internet radio station. Stay tuned for more information.
