JUMBLED MESS ATOP THE LEAGUE: Heading into the 2008-09 season, it was evident that there was much parity in the Cascade Conference – which is exactly what has occurred with just six games remaining in the regular season.  Evergreen State leads the loop with an 11-4 record, one-half game up on Eastern Oregon, Oregon Tech, and Warner Pacific, with the Yotes a game and a half behind the lead at 9-5.  Tech will meet Warner on Friday, with the loser dropping into the five-loss group, with WP still having to go to Evergreen later this season.  Evergreen has road games at EOU and CI left, while EOU will host the Coyotes in two weeks.

POTTS HAS BIG WEEKEND: Helping the Coyote cause last weekend was point-guard Kelvin Potts (Oakland, Calif. / Chabot CC), who scored a season-high 26 points in the win Friday over Southern Oregon.  The junior averaged 18.5 points and 4.5 assists per game, converting 14-of-20 field goal attempts, including 5-of-6 shots from three-point range.

MCGEE’S DOUBLE-DOUBLE ENDS, STARTS A NEW ONE: After seven straight games with a double-double, Craig McGee (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) saw his streak ended with a 13 point, 8 rebound performance against Southern Oregon.  However, he started a new streak against OIT on Saturday, scoring 23 points, with 11 rebounds.  McGee has now recorded 16 double-doubles in his career– well off the school record of 102 double-doubles set by R.C. Owens from 1953-56.

MCINTOSH HAVING A BLOCK PARTY: For the second time this season, Jabari McIntosh (Union City, Calif. / West Valley CC) recorded six blocked shots in a game – part of a five point, eight rebound performance against SOU.  The junior ranks second in the league in blocks per game (1.5), averaging over two blocks per game in league play.

CHAMP HAS CAREER NIGHT: Guard Bryan Champ (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS) had a big night in Saturday’s loss to OIT, scoring a career-high 23 points, while converting 14-of-17 field goal attempts in the two games.  The senior did keep a pair of long individual streaks going, as Champ has recorded a steal in 52 consecutive games, at least two points scored in 70-straight contests.

RECORD BOOK: Three Coyotes find themselves in the Top-10 on The C of I single-season or career record book with six games remaining in the regular season.  On the single-season list, Craig McGee ranks seventh all-time in free throw attempts (184), with Jabari McIntosh ninth in blocked shots (37).  For a career, Bryan Champ ranks second all-time in steals (242), while needing seven assists to crack the Top-10 in the category (222).  Craig McGee ranks third all-time in free throw attempts (422), fourth all-time in blocked shots (70), is No. 9 in free throws made (258), while surpassing Elgin Baylor for No. 10 on the career rebounds list (493).  McGee has scored 930 points in his career, looking to become the 16th player in program history with 1,000 or more points.

YOTES RECEIVE 1 POINT IN NAIA POLL: The seventh regular-season NAIA Top-25 Poll was released Monday, with Bethel (Ind.) the new No. 1 team, Oregon Tech climbed to No. 3, Eastern Oregon up five spots to No. 13, Warner Pacific to No. 14, with Evergreen State at No. 23.  The Yotes were listed in the Others Receiving Votes category for the fourth-straight week, receiving one voter point.  The Top-25 poll will be released every Monday for the remainder of the season.

TOUGHEST SCHEDULE?: According to the Massey Ratings, published weekly, the Coyotes have the fourth-toughest schedule in all of the NAIA Division II.  The tabulation is based on win-loss records and classification of opponents.

COYOTES IN THE CCC STATS: As a team, the Yotes lead the CCC in conference-only games in scoring defense (70.0) and defensive field goal percentage (.413), while ranking second in rebound margin (.+4.5), and third in field goal percentage (.466).  For the entire season, the Yotes are second in the loop in defensive field goal percentage (.422) and blocks per game (4.0), third in scoring defense (71.0), fourth in rebound margin (+1.4), fifth in opponents rebounds (35.2), sixth in scoring margin (+2.7), field goal percentage (.462), and steals per game (7.4), seventh in three-point percentage (.333) and rebounds per game (36.6), eighth in scoring average (73.7) and assists per game (13.0), and ninth in free throw percentage (.653) and defensive three-point percentage (.356). CORBAN PUTS HOME STREAK ON LINE AGAINST THE YOTES: One of the more improved teams in the CCC hosts the Coyotes on Friday night, as Corban puts a five-game home win streak to the test.  The Warriors (9-14, 5-9) have climbed into the conference playoff chase with a three-game win streak – but dropped their last game, a 92-84 loss at Evergreen State.  Corban has five players averaging in double figures – Clay Martin (16. 7 ppg, 4.6 rpg), Ian Logan (12.7 ppg, 5.0 rpg), Wade Douglas (11.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg), Ben Potloff (11.3 ppg, 3.0 rpg), and Paul Martin (10.1 ppg, 4.5 rpg), but have struggled stopping teams (allowing 77 points a night), while ranking tenth in the league in rebounding (-5.8).  It is the 64th meeting between the clubs, with the Yotes holding a 41-22 series edge, including the 77-72 win in Caldwell in January.

CONCORDIA LOOKING TO PULL THEMSELVES FROM THE CELLAR: Saturday night, the Yotes head to Portland for a meeting with Concordia, as the Cavaliers (7-16, 2-12) look to end a seven-game losing streak.  CU is in the midst of their worst season since the 2000-01 campaign – having dropped all eight CCC road games, allowing nearly 82 points a night.  The Cavs do have offensive firepower, as Steven Vaughan (18.7 ppg, 3.7 rpg) ranks third in the CCC in scoring, including a 36-point outburst at Corban, while athletic post Alex Tiefenthaler (15.1 ppg, 8.1 rpg) and guard Desmond Meray (10.6 ppg, 1.5 apg) can put up big numbers.  The Yotes topped CU 79-59 in Caldwell – the lowest scoring night of the season for the Cavaliers, with C of I holding a 43-10 all-time series edge.

GAME RECAP: C  OF I 85, SOUTHERN OREGON 71: A pair of Steffen Spinks (Manteca, Calif. / East Union HS) three-pointers fueled a 15-2 C of I run early in the second half, as the Coyotes picked up an 85-71 victory over Southern Oregon Friday at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.  After a Josh McDermott put-back pull the Raiders within 41-40 - the Yotes pushed the tempo, getting back-to-back Bryan Champ buckets and a three-point play from Craig McGee to push the lead to eight.  Spinks would hit a trey from the left corner to make it 51-40, and after a SOU basket, Champ hit a runner and Spinks canned a long three from the top of the key to cap the run.  Southern would claw within 67-62 on a Humphrey Jackson triple with eight minutes left - but could not get any closer.  Kelvin Potts led four players in double figures for the Coyotes with a season-high 26 points, with Spinks adding 19.  Champ had 13 points on a perfect 6-for-6 night from the field, to go with six steals, with McGee scoring 13 points with eight rebounds - ending his double-double streak at seven.  Jabari McIntosh had a season-high eight rebounds, to go with five points and six blocked shots.  Trevor McCay had a career-high 22 points for SOU, including four three-pointers, with Jackson adding a season-high 17 points.

GAME RECAP: OREGON TECH 83, C OF I 77:  Miles Daley scored all nine of his points in the final four minutes, with his three-point play with 3:57 remaining providing the big boost, as No. 3 ranked Oregon Tech withstood a C of I upset bid, topping the Coyotes, 83-77, Saturday inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.  A 15-4 run midway through the second half, capped by a Nate Lewis four-point play, gave OIT a 61-51 lead.  However, the hosts would not go away, as a Steffen Spinks jumper capped a 7-0 run to pull the Yotes within 65-63.  Daley would take over, grabbing a key offensive rebound off his own miss, with his subsequent three-point play pushing the lead to five, then following a C of I turnover, hit a baseline jumper to help the Owls to the key league win.  Tech used a 12-0 first half run to build their biggest lead of the night a 22-11, but Bryan Champ would spark the Coyotes, hitting five first half three-pointers, the final one with two minutes left in the period tied the game at 36-36.  Justin Parnell led OIT with 22 points, with Jguwon Hogges adding 19 points, including 5-of-6 shooting from the line in the final two minutes.  Champ had a career-high 23 points, with Craig McGee recording his eighth double-double in his last nine games, scoring 23 points with 11 rebounds.  The Yotes hit 11-of-18 shots from outside the arc, but converted just 10-of-17 free throw attempts.

LADY YOTES SECURE PLAYOFF SPOT: With their win at Warner Pacific on Jan. 24, the Lady Yotes became the first team to clinch a spot in the eight-team Cascade Conference Tournament in late February.  The C of I has now advanced to the postseason in 13 of the 14 seasons since women’s basketball was reinstated at the College in 1995.  The Coyotes have advanced to three NAIA Division II national tournaments (1998 – first round, 2000 – quarterfinals, 2001 – championship game), but have never won a CCC Tournament title (advanced to the finals in 2000, 2002, 2005, and 2008).

YOTES REMAIN IN TOP-10 OF NAIA POLL: The C of I dropped one spot to No. 9 in the latest NAIA Division II Top-25 Coaches Poll, released Monday afternoon by the national office in Kansas City. Mo.  The Lady Yotes have now been in the NAIA’s Top-10 for the last three weeks and continue to be the highest ranked CCC team.  Two other conference schools were in the poll - Concordia climbed two spots to No. 13, while Southern Oregon jumped two spots to No. 23 after their win over The C of I.  The two unbeaten teams remaining in the NAIA Division II sit atop the poll - Morningside (Iowa) and Shawnee State (Ohio), followed by Northwestern (Iowa), Davenport (Mich.), and the College of the Ozarks (Mo.).  he poll will be released each Monday for the remainder of the season.

WIN STREAKS SNAPPED: The 75-69 loss on Friday night to No. 23 ranked Southern Oregon ended a pair of long winning streaks for the Lady Yotes, as The C of I saw a 14-game home win streak snapped and a 21-game overall win streak stopped.  The 21-game streak is the longest ever by a current CCC team, and was the second-longest in CCC history, behind only a 23-game win streak by Northwest Nazarene during the 1999-00 season.

BEST START EVER: The 22-2 start pushes the Lady Yotes into elite status, as The C of I has recorded their best  ten, 15, and 20-game starts to a season.  The 1997-98 team had held the school record for best 20-game start, recording a 17-3 record.  The  Yotes have already secured the best 25-game start to a season, as the 1996-97 began 20-5.  Up next for the team is the school record for wins in a season – 26, set during the 2000-01 campaign, going 26-8, concluding with a run at the NAIA Tournament.

THREE-POINT BARRAGE AGAINST THE LADY YOTES: Coming into last week, the Lady Yotes had the top defensive three-point percentage in the loop, with opponents converting just .256 percent of their treys.  Against Southern and OIT, things changed quickly, as SOU hit 11-of-21 triples and Tech nailed 10-of-21 – with the teams combining for 20-percent of the total The C of I has allowed through 24 games this season.

OWEN HAS CAREER NIGHT: Coming through in the clutch on Saturday was Whitney Owen (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS), who recorded career highs in both points and rebounds in the win over Oregon Tech.  The junior had 27 points and 14 rebounds, going 9-of-12 from the field and 8-of-10 from the foul line, including the two free throws that clinched the victory.  For the year, Owen is averaging a career-best 11 points and seven rebounds per game.

VANDER ESCH STREAKS STILL ALIVE: Forward Christon Vander Esch (Riggins, Idaho / Treasure Valley CC) kept a pair of long personal streaks alive at home last weekend.  The senior has scored at least one point in 63-straight games, recorded a rebound in 73-straight games, and had a steal in 41-straight games.

CHANGES IN THE RECORD BOOK: Three Coyotes have found themselves among the pages of the single-season and career record books, with six games remaining in the regular-season.  Leading the way is Christon Vander Esch, who is No. 1 on The C of I career steals list (232), is second on the all-time blocked shots list (142), fifth all-time in free throw attempts (375), sixth all-time in free throws made (241) and rebounds (619),  eighth in field goals made (312), field goals attempted (817), and points scored (922) – while closing in on the list in three-pointers made (51), three-pointers attempted (156), and assists (183).  This season, she also ranks No. 4 on the single-season list for blocks (51) and steals (82), No. 5 in free throw attempts (163), and No. 10 in free throws made (10).  Nicole Gall (Boise, Idaho / Santa Clara U.) ranks third on the single-season list for three-pointers made (69), sixth in three-point attempts (170), and eighth in steals (69), while her three-pointers made rank sixth in a career and her attempts rank tenth.  Nicole Bruce (Boise, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) rounds out the group, ranking sixth in a season with 42 blocks, with her career blocked shots total of 49 ranking sixth all-time.  Two others – Whitney Owen and Kayla Brewer (Arco, Idaho / Butte County HS) are closing in on the career top-ten for steals.

LADY YOTES IN THE CCC STATS:  As a team, the Lady Yotes lead the CCC in scoring average (79.2), defensive three-point percentage (.279), blocked shots per game (6.1), steals per game (17.6), rebounds per game (47.0), and turnover margin (+7.2) – leading the nation in steals per game, second in rebounds per game, and third in blocks per game.  The team is second in the CCC in scoring margin (+14.2) and defensive field goal percentage (.361), third in assists per game (15.8), fifth in three-point percentage (.349) and rebound margin (+2.4), seventh free throw percentage (.668), scoring defense (65.1),  and field goal percentage (.399), and 11th in opponents rebound average (44.7).  Individually, Christon Vander Esch is second in the league in steals per game (3.4), blocks per game (2.1), and rebounds per game (8.9), and is seventh in scoring average (14.5).  Nicole Bruce is third in blocked shots per game (1.8), while Nicole Gall ranks second in three-pointers per game (2.9), fourth in both steals per game (2.8) and three-point percentage (.404), is sixth in scoring average (15.0), and is seventh in blocks per game (1.0).  Two others are on the list, as Whitney Owen is third in field goal percentage (.531) and Meghan Hughes (Eagle, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) is ninth in field goal percentage (.477).

CCC LEADERS: Scoring Average – Kristina Schumacher (CAS) 21.1, Robin Swain (CAS) 17.6, Katie Steigleman (CRB) 16.0,  Jacki Speer (SOU) 15.7, Emily Gray (NCU) 15.1; Rebound Average – Speer (SOU) 10.4, Christon Vander Esch (CI)  8.9, Gray 8.7, Maya Gross (CAS) 8.5, Ashley Baker (SOU) 8.2; Field Goal Percentage –Ann Snodderly (CU) .551, Danielle Clauson (.CU) .541, Whitney Owen (CI) .531, Brianna Smith (EOU) .503, Amanda Johnston (OIT) .502; Assist Average – Meagan Miyasaka (OIT) 6.2, Kailey Bostwick (CRB) 4.9, Jenny Fiso (EOU) 4.5, Rebecca Gimeno (CU) 4.5, Whitney Scott (SOU) 4.2.

HEADING TO CORBAN: The Lady Yotes open the road trip to the Willamette Valley Friday at Corban, who snapped a five-game losing streak last weekend at Evergreen.  The Warriors (9-13, 5-9 CCC) have three players averaging in double figures – freshman Katie Steigleman (16.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg), along with guards Jennesa Miller (11.6 ppg, 3.6 rpg) and Kailey Bostwick (10.2 ppg, 4.9 apg), but Corban allows over 70 points a game and opponents average nearly three more rebounds than the Warriors.  The Lady Yotes won the first meeting of the season, 74-54, forcing 33 Corban turnovers – as they upped their all-time series record to 19-13.

GAME OF THE WEEK AT CONCORDIA: It should be a doozie of a game on Saturday night, as first-place in the CCC is on the line as the No. 8 Lady Yotes tangle with No. 13 ranked Concordia.  The Cavaliers (20-2, 13-1) have won 20 of their last 21 games – with the lone loss a 62-53 decision to The C of I in mid-January.  The multi-faceted CU attack is led by the Gimeno twins – Rebeeca Gimeno (10.9 ppg, 4.2 apg) and Angela Gimeno (9.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg), two of the top guards in the loop, along with solid forwards Ann Snodderly (10.8 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 2.1 b/g), who leads the league in field goal percentage and blocks, and Danielle Clauson (10.0 ppg, 4.1), last year’s Freshman of the Year.  The Cavs average nearly 17 points more than their opponents’ during the season, while hitting 44-percent of their field goals.  It is the 29th meeting between the teams, with the Lady Yotes holding a commanding 24-4 series edge, including 14 in a row.

GAME RECAP – SOUTHERN OREGON 75, C OF I 69: A 34-6 first run in the first half helped Southern Oregon build a 24-point lead, as the No. 23 ranked Raiders withstood a poor shooting second half to upset No. 9 C of I, 75-69, Friday inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.  Early on, it was all Lady Yotes, as Nicole Gall hit a pair of three's, sandwiched around a Christon Vander Esch lay-up, as C of I jumped out to an 8-0 lead.  But the Raiders responded, as Whitney Scott hit four three-pointers, Rhiannon Dickison added three, and Emily Brookins and Carly Wood each hit two - all in the period, as SOU built a 52-34 halftime lead.  The C of I would not fold, holding the Raiders without a field goal for a 14-minute stretch in the second half, forcing 16 turnovers - pulling within 68-66 on a Whitney Owen lay-up with 2:03 left.  The Yotes would get a steal on SOU's next possession, but Gall misfired on a go-ahead three - and the Raiders hit 5-of-8 free throws to seal the win.  Dickison led Southern with 25 points, with Scott adding 20.  Jacki Speer had a monster night with 12 points and 20 rebounds - as the Raiders held a commanding 63-44 edge on the glass.  Gall led all scorers with 27 points, three blocks, and five steals - setting a school record with 18 three-point attempts and tying her own school record with 24 field goal attempts.  Vander Esch had a double-double, scoring 20 points with 12 rebounds.

GAME RECAP – C OF I 73, OREGON TECH 68: Whitney Owen had a career night, scoring 27 points and 14 rebounds, with her steal and two free throws with three seconds left sealing a 73-68 College of Idaho victory over Oregon Tech, Saturday in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.  The Lady Yotes built a 62-54 lead with six minutes left, but watched as Nicole Morgan drained three consecutive three-pointers, drawing OIT within 66-65 with three minutes remaining.  A Kellie Morey lay-up with 1:12 left pulled the Owls within 69-68 - just starting the late-game drama. The C of I would see Christon Vander Esch make the first of two free throws to push the lead to two, but missed the second, allowing Tech a chance.  However, Meagan Miyasaka was called for a double-dribble with 23 seconds left.  The Yotes would give OIT another crack at it, as Nicole Gall made 1-of-2 free throws and Vander Esch missed a pair, but Megan Ross was stripped of the ball by Owen at half court, with her two free throws giving the Yotes the final cushion.  Despite battling foul trouble all night,  Vander Esch had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Yotes, with Gall adding 13.  Morgan and Morey each had 20 points in the loss for OIT.

WOMEN’S MEDLEY RELAY HITS NAIA TIME: Also meeting an NAIA “A” mark at the two-day meet was the women’s distance medley relay, which placed third in a time of 12:43.36.  The quartet of Maggie Miller (Anchorage, Alaska / Lane CC), Jayne Saunders (Emmett, Idaho / Emmett HS), Kayloni Jones (Nine Mile Falls, Wash. / Lakeside HS), and Helm become the second group of C of I women to meet the automatic mark in program history.

OTHERS AT THE MEET: Other women's runners competing included Jones, who placed 13th in the 800-meters (2:23.32), Courtney Mitchell (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS), who was 18th in the 60-meters (8.37), and Emily McCutchan (Kuna, Idaho / Cole Valley Christian HS), who established the first C of I indoor mark in the long jump (15-7.5), placing 12th.  Only two men's runners were in action, as Andre Archer (Caldwell, Idaho / Caldwell HS) took 22nd in the 200-meters (24.67) and Geoff Williams (placed 12th in the mile (4:39.16).

NEXT FULL ACTION IN TWO WEEKS: The Lady Yotes may run a distance medley relay this Friday at the United Heritage Indoor in Nampa, but the next full action for the squad is Feb. 13-14.  That weekend, the majority of the team will compete in the Boise State Team Meet in Nampa, while a select group of runners will head to Seattle for the Husky Indoor Invitational.

NATIONAL MARKS: NAIA “A” – Stephanie Helm (Mile), Tegan Troutner (Mile), Women’s DMR.  NAIA “B” – None.

SKIING: Lady Yotes continue winning ways, team set to volunteer at Special Olympics World Winter Games

LAST WEEK: at NWCSC Qualifier #3 (giant slalom) – Saturday (Men 1st, Women 1st), Sunday (Men 2nd, Women 1st)

COMING UP: Idle this weekend (volunteering at 2009 Special Olympic World Winter Games); Feb. 14-15 host NWCSC Qualifier #4 (Slalom), Bogus Basin Resort.

LADY YOTES CONTINUE THEIR DOMINANCE: Three-quarters of the way through the 2009 Northwest Collegiate Ski Conference season, and The C of I women’s alpine squad has nearly clinched their sixth-straight league crown, thanks to a pair of convincing victories this weekend at Silver Mountain.  Both days, the Lady Yotes had three competitors in the Top-6, as they defeated the University of Washington by seven seconds on Saturday and 11-seconds on Sunday.   Kelley Fitzpatrick (Keizer, Ore. / McNary HS) took third on Saturday and fourth on Sunday,  with Katie Sawaya (San Rafael, Calif. / U. of British Columbia) notching a fourth-place finish on Saturday, followed by a sixth-place finish on Sunday.  Gabrielle Gould (East Burke, Vt. / U. of Vermont ) finished second in Sunday’s two runs, with Nicki Maxwell (Belfry, Mont. / Red Lodge HS) in sixth on Saturday.

WIN STREAK FOR THE LADIES: With the team wins, the Lady Yotes have now won their last 15 NWCSC qualifiers, dating back to the 2007 season.

MEN EKE OUT WIN ON SATURDAY, PLACE SECOND ON SUNDAY: For the second-straight weekend, The C of I men had trouble keeping their squad on course for a pair of runs, as the Yotes picked up a win Saturday over British Columbia by a mere six-tenths of a second, then falling to second-place on Sunday, five seconds behind Washington.  Saturday, the UBC men had three finishers in the Top-10, however, a fourth-place finish by Dewey Moss (Jerome, Idaho / Oregon State U.), a fifth-place finish from Mats Boehnke (Carson City, Calif. / Carson HS), and an 11th-place finish from Travis Morris (Santa Fe, N.M. / Santa Fe Prep) gave the Yotes just enough cushion for their fourth team win of the season.  Sunday, Boehnke was the top C of I finisher, taking second, with Morris stepping up for sixth-place and Sam Finch (Redding, Calif. / Foothill HS) in ninth.  However, Moss and Eric Ostrand (Gilford, N.H. / Gilford HS), who each had Top-5 first runs, were unable to stay upright on their second run - allowing UW to take the win with three skiers in the Top-7.

NWCSC TEAM STANDINGS: Men – C of I 560, Idaho 460, Washington 335, British Columbia 335, Oregon 300, Washington State 247, Puget Sound 225, Oregon State 132; Women – C of I 600, Oregon 410, British Columbia 370, Washington 345, Puget Sound 275,  Idaho 250, Washington State 216.

HELPING WITH THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS: The Coyotes will take a week off from competition, but will be involved on a larger scale this weekend.  The team will join countless others as volunteers for the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Boise.
