Corban Sweeps C of I

The College of Idaho hit just 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position on the afternoon, as Corban University stunned the No. 21 ranked Coyotes, sweeping today’s doubleheader at Volcanoes Stadium in Keizer, Ore.

The Warriors (28-21, 16-15 NAIA West) hung on to win Game 1, 3-2, while using a three-run seventh inning rally to win Game 2, 7-3.  The losses by the Yotes (36-16, 21-11) hurt the squads chances for an at-large berth to the NAIA National Championships if the team fails to win next week’s NAIA West Grouping Tournament.

Yotes Clinch #1 Seed

The College of Idaho secured the top-seed and opening round bye in the 2012 NAIA West Grouping Tournament with a doubleheader split against Corban University, this afternoon at Volcanoes Stadium in Keizer, Ore.

The No. 21 ranked Coyotes (36-14, 21-9 NAIA West) committed a season-high six errors in a 12-7 Game 1 loss, but rebounded for a 13-4 victory in the late game.

It marks the first time since the 2002 season that the Yotes that The C of I earned a tournament top seed – which also was the last time the team qualified for the NAIA World Series.

LOCATION OF GAMES: Friday’s doubleheader will be played at Volcanoes Stadium in Keizer, Ore. – the home of the San Francisco Giants Class “A” affiliate, Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.  Saturday’s doubleheader will either be played at Volcanoes Stadium or on Corban’s home diamond – which has been unplayable due to an underwater outfield. 

Yotes Climb to #21

The College of Idaho climbed three spots in the latest NAIA Top-25 Coaches Poll, jumping to No. 21, released this afternoon by the national office in Kansas City, Mo.. 

The C of I (35-13), coming off a series win over Menlo, received 161 voter points in the poll, 31 more points than last week - climbing from No. 24.

LSU-Shreveport sits in the No. 1 spot, followed by Oklahoma City, Faulkner (Ala.), Azusa Pacific (Calif.), and Lee (Tenn..), with Lewis-Clark State ranked No. 9.  The poll will be released each Tuesday for the remainder of the regular-season.

Griffiths Pitcher of the Week

College of Idaho right-hander Todd Griffiths was honored today as the week's Red Lion-NAIA West Pitcher of the Week, announced this afternoon by the league office in La Grande, Ore.

The senior, from Meridian, was stellar on the mound in a pair of appearances, as the Coyotes won 3-of-4 games against Menlo College - lowering their Magic Number to clinch the NAIA West Grouping Tournament No. 1 seed to one.

Humberger Wins #400

A five-run seventh inning rally in Game 1 gave College of Idaho skipper Shawn Humberger his 400th career victory, as the Coyotes and Menlo College split an NAIA West doubleheader at scorching Wolfe Field.

Yotes Take 2 From Menlo

Tyler Andazola went 6-for-9 on the afternoon and Jarel Lewis added five hits as The College of Idaho moved its record to 10-2 during the month of April, sweeping an NAIA West doubleheader from Menlo College, winning 5-4 and 14-4, at sunny Wolfe Field.

The Yotes (34-12, 19-7 NAIA West) rallied from a 4-3 deficit in Game 1, getting an RBI ground out by Jeffrey Harris in the eighth to tie the score and Todd Griffiths scoring the winning run in the ninth on a throwing error.

Yotes Ranked #24 in NAIA

With three road victories last weekend, The College of Idaho surged back into NAIA Top-25 Coaches Poll for the second time this season, climbing to No. 24 in the latest tabulation, released this afternoon by the national office in Kansas City, Mo.. 

The C of I (32-12) received 130 voter points in the poll, 83 more points than last week - climbing from the fourth spot in the "others receiving votes" category.

Yotes Sweep CCC Awards

The College of Idaho swept the latest Red Lion-Cascade Conference weekly awards, announced this afternoon by the league office in La Grande, Ore.

Right-hander Taylor Nicholson was named Pitcher of the Week, while centerfielder Tyler Andazola was named Player of the Week.
