C of I set to celebrate Cinco de Mayo

The College of Idaho’s Association of Latino Americano Students (ALAS) will host its 16th annual Cinco de Mayo celebration on campus Saturday, May 5, from noon to 6 p.m. at Hayman Field. The student-organized, community-encompassing event will celebrate Latin American culture, music, history and tradition. This year’s celebration will be special as it marks the 150-year anniversary of the holiday.

Rosenthal Gallery hosts senior art show ‘The XIV’

The College of Idaho is pleased to announce the opening of “The XIV,” a gallery of work created by graduating senior art majors. The show opens April 20 and continues through May 12 at the David and Blanche Rosenthal Gallery of Art, located inside Blatchley Hall on the C of I campus in Caldwell. There will be a catered reception from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday during which the community is invited to meet the artists and view their work.

C of I hosts annual Student Research Conference

The College of Idaho will host its 7th annual Student Research Conference on Saturday, April 21 in the Langroise Center on the C of I campus in Caldwell. The conference, which runs from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m., serves as an open house of student academic achievement, providing an opportunity for the campus and the community to view the accomplishments of students from a variety of disciplines in one place.

C of I, Bon Appétit set for Low Carbon Diet Day

The College of Idaho and its food service management company, Bon Appétit, are set to celebrate sustainability and show diners how to decrease their carbon “foodprint” through the fifth annual Low Carbon Diet Day on April 19. Guests to Simplot Dining Hall will be treated to a special menu featuring freshly-prepared, environmentally-friendly foods. Lunch will be served from 10:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The cost is $7 per person for all-you-can-eat.

C of I receives $500,000 gift for student scholarships

The College of Idaho has received a $512,043 gift from the estate of the late William J. Carter, a grandson of founding C of I President William Judson Boone. Carter, who passed away in 2011, left his estate to the John O. and Sara Boone Carter Family Scholarship, an endowed fund set up to honor his parents and support students who are in need of financial assistance to complete their educations. The gift makes the Carter Family Scholarship the largest endowed scholarship fund at The College of Idaho.

Stand Your Ground law discussed on Insights

The implications of Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law for civil society are discussed in the newest edition of College of Idaho Insights by history professor Steve Maughan and political economy professors Kerry Hunter and Jasper LiCalzi.

The conversation includes a discussion of the differing views of John Locke and Emma Goldman, whether individuals give up the power to police their own rights to the government, and psychologist Steven Pinker's recent book "The Better Angels of Our Nature" and declining levels of viiolence in society over time. 

C of I to host planetarium show, Astronomy Day

Space enthusiasts and the public will have two opportunities to learn about the spring sky during an April celebration of Astronomy Month at The College of Idaho. Whittenberger Planetarium will host a public show featuring the planet Saturn at 7 p.m. April 11 inside Boone Science Hall on the C of I campus in Caldwell. Tickets cost $4 for adults and $2 for children ages 4-17. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (208) 459-5211. The College also will hold its annual Astronomy Day on April 28.
