lady yotes sign three freshmen for 2012
College of Idaho volleyball head coach Liz Mendiola announced today the signing of a trio of incoming freshmen to NAIA Letters of Intent for the 2012 season.
Setter Sierra Porter of Meridian, outside hitter Abbey Fenton of Burns, Ore., and middle blocker Kylie Porter of Boise, will join the six-time defending Cascade Conference champions this fall. They join two Division I transfers – Sofia Anxo and Elisa Brochado, as the first five signees for 2012.
“Sierra, Abbey, and Kylie will be keys to the immediate, as well as the future success of our program,” said Mendiola. “I see them all making a smooth transition to the college game and contributing right away.”
Porter, a 5-9 setter from Rocky Mountain High, is coming off an outstanding prep career – helping the Grizzlies to four-straight 5A state tournaments, including a runner-up finish in 2009 and a state title in 2010. She is a four-time All-Southern Idaho Conference selection and was named 5A SIC Player of the Year as a senior.
Fenton, a 5-11 hitter from Burns High, led the Highlanders to three-straight Eastern Oregon League titles and three-straight trips to the 3A state tournament – taking third in 2010, second in 2009, and winning the state title in 2011. She was the Co-EOL Player of the Year in 2011 and is a three-time 3A All-State selection.
Porter, a 6-3 blocker from Capital High, was the top hitter for the Eagles squad, helping the team to the 2010 state tournament. She led the team as a senior with 276 kills and 60 blocks, earning All-Southern Idaho Conference honors in 2010 and 2011.
“All three were heavily recruited and we feel very fortunate that they felt The College of Idaho was the best fit for them,” said Mendiola.
The Lady Yotes, coming off a fifth-place finish at the NAIA National Championships, open up their 2012 season in mid-August.
