December 13 Thursday Ballet Idaho's Nutcracker production captures the imagination of all ages with colorful sets, costumes and sparkling choreography. Caldwell Fine Arts is pleased to present this holiday spectacular for the 13th year. One of the hallmarks of a good company is the stability of the company roster. This year many dancers with 5-9 years experience have retired, so the company will introduce 9 new dancers. There are three principal dancers from Asia. Shigemi Kurata from Tokyo, Japan, began dancing at age 4 and received her training in Japan and England. She has won numerous awards in England and Japan, including the Japan National Dance Competition in 1997 & 1998. She will play the part of Clara, the young woman who receives the Nutcracker doll. In Toni Pimble's new choreography, Clara plays a major role. Hyoung Il Joung comes from Seoul, South Korea. His study began at age 11 and includes a degree in dance from Hanyang University. In 2000 he received the rank of soloist with the National Ballet of Korea. He was honored as the official Korean representative at the Asia International Dance Competition in Japan. He is featured in the Spanish Dance. Kyung-Man Moon was a soloist with the National Ballet of Korea from 1996-2000. He also has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance from Dong-A University. He was a finalist at the International Asia Ballet Competition in Japan in 1999. He will be one of the Russian Trepak dancers. Jennifer Martin, principal dancer with 8 years in the company, will be the Sugar Plum Fairy. In the recent performance of Don Quixote Dana Oland remarked that she "danced with the assuredness and grace of a ballerina at the top of her game, especially in the 32 consecutive turns in the final grand pas de deux." Brett Mills, another principal dancer, was trained at the Chicago City Ballet and danced professionally with Ballet Met and Ballet Iowa. She will be the mechanical doll during the party scene. Jared Hunt, a new member of the company, was trained at the University of Utah's School of Dance and has danced with Ballet West and other companies in the United States and Asia. He will play Hans/Nutcracker. The remainder of the company was trained in studios all over the United States -- Arizona, California, Utah, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Kansas, Ohio, New York, Colorado, Alabama, Texas-and Thailand and Mexico. Jennifer Martin of Ballet Idaho selected 44 children to be mice, party guests, and lady bugs. Studios represented include Backstage Dance Center in Payette and Ontario, Christensen School of Dance, Dance Arts Academy II in Caldwell and Dance Stars and Kennedy School of Dance in Nampa. Tamera Scott of Dance Arts Academy was the rehearsal teacher. Local Cast: Mice Party Guests Angels
