November 14 MANDING JATA profiles the music, dance and oral traditions of the Mali Empire, the region now known as French West Africa. Much of the repertoire comes from the 13th and 15th centuries, when Mali was the largest Empire in African history. Its central city was the fabled Timbuktu. The wonder and mystery of MANDING JATA appeals to all ages. Its performances are a "cultural circus" with virtuoso instrumental performances and dancing which is a "dazzling display of strength, grace and acrobatics." .
