September 11 Thursday, 7:30 pm $11-15 adult; $7-11 student The fall events begin on September 11 with Barachois from the Prince Edward Island. The word Barachois (bara-shwa’) means shallow pools of water separated from the sea by sand dunes. They play Acadian traditional music-a rhythmic, high-voltage style born in the heart of a culture kept alive through two and a half centuries on the tiny island in Northeastern Canada. The songs were brought over from France with some of the first settlers in North America, and have been infused with other influences—Scottish and Irish fiddling especially. Their driving foot rhythms, voices, piano, and home made percussion instruments provide a musical genre all its own. This musical style comes from Acadian “kitchen parties” and community dances that relieved the monotony of daily activity. Their music is dished up with equal portions of dance, humor and innovation which gives the audience a glimpse of an ancient heritage as well as a good time. This family group of Albert, Helene Arsenault-Bergeron, Louise Arsenault, and Chuck Arsenault is making their FAREWELL TOUR after seven years of traveling North America and Europe. They have won many awards including Concert of the Year for their performance at the Milwaukee Irish Festival. At the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow, Scotland, they were cited as the leading proponent of Acadian traditional music. They performed with great success at the Nampa Civic Center two years ago. (www.barachois.com) . |
