| January 22 Thursday $8-12 adult; $4-8 student On January 22, the New Year includes the Chvatal-Kritzer Duo. They have been favorites of audiences in the Northwest and beyond. Both soprano Janet Chvatal and Scott Kritzer have distinguished solo careers. She sang Christine in the Vienna production of The Phantom of the Opera. He had solo performances in the Carnegie Recital Hall, Wigmore Hall in London, and in Sapporo, Japan. He specialized in contemporary guitar music, but the duo has pulled him back into the mainstream. Both have made Portland their homes and began their duo work in 1994. Last May they received unanimous praise for a concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D. C. “People who have heard us separately say they hear a natural resonance when we perform together,” Krizer says. Both are committed to bringing an intimate and new style of concert performance to audiences. They are “a viable alternative to the stuffy atmosphere of the classical vocal recital,” according to one critic. The program theme, “The Water is Wide,” is a collection of folk melodies from around the world, including favorite American songs like “Tis a gift to be simple,” colorful and bawdy songs from England and Spain, and exotic melodies of Haiti and Puerto Rico. There will also be highlights from the Phantom of the Opera and Brazilian guitar solos. The program will appeal to a diverse audience of all ages and tastes in music. The Chvatal-Kritzer Duo visited Parma High School students and teacher Jeanne Kusterer during the Caldwell leg of the duo's tour. . |
