November 12 Wednesday $10-14 adult; $6-10 student Learn more about Master Classes offered by the artists on Nov. 11 and an additional afternoon performance on Nov. 12 at Caldwell High School. Pianist Navah Perlman and cellist Zuill Bailey are joined by the extraordinary young violinist Giora Schmidt in the renamed Perlman/Schmidt/Bailey Piano Trio. The group was originally formed in 1998 by three virtuoso artists to combine their strengths as soloists with their love of chamber music. The current trio continues to present energetic and passionate performances at major halls, festivals, and universities across America, including performances at the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center and the Ravinia Festival. The ensemble has commissioned and performed a piano trio by composer Lowell Liebermann (Trio No. 2, Op. 77), and participated in a weeklong residency with the Florida International Festival. In May of 2003, the trio traveled to Cuba for a performance of the Beethoven Triple Concerto with the National Orchestra of Cuba, and were re-engaged at Ravinia to play a recital and the Beethoven Triple with the Chicago Symphony in June 2003. The Perlman/Schmidt/Bailey trio is also committed to planning and conducting educational and community outreach activities, from workshops with young children to in-depth residencies at major universities. The charisma of these artists -- both in their music-making and in their communication with audiences -- is evident in every performance. Known for her lyrical eloquence on the stage, Navah Perlman has performed to critical acclaim in major concert venues throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Ms. Perlman began her piano studies at age six with Ronit Amir Lowenthal and later attended the Juilliard School where she worked with Herbert Stessin. She also studied chamber music with Robert Mann, Felix Galimir, and the late Dorothy DeLay. Ms. Perlman holds an honors degree in Art History from Brown University. Ms. Perlman has appeared with numerous orchestras throughout the United States including the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Nashville Symphony, Oklahoma City Symphony, and Arkansas Symphony. Other North American engagements have included performances with the Colorado Springs Symphony, West Virginia Symphony, and Fort Worth Chamber Orchestra. International engagements have included performances with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Mexico, the Israel Philharmonic and the New Japan Philharmonic in Suntory Hall. Highlights of this season include performances of Beethoven Piano Concerto #3, the Beethoven Triple Concerto, Rachmaninoff Piano Concert #2 and Mozart Concerto in D Minor with the Colorado, Detroit and Toledo symphonies. Recital appearances included performances in Washington, D.C., Dallas, Malibu, Las Vegas, Scottsdale, and Baltimore. In the upcoming season, Ms. Perlman will tour the United States under the auspices of the Moscow State Radio Orchestra, performing the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto #2. In the 2004/05 season, she will tour with the Prague Symphony, playing Brahms Piano Concerto #1, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto #3 and the Chopin Piano Concerto #2. Ms. Perlman’s first recital recording was released with EMI in February 2001. With his superb tone and pure musicianship, violinist Giora Schmidt has already proven himself an outstanding young performer. Just out of his teens, he studied with Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School in New York, where he continues to work with Itzhak Perlman. His 2003/04 calendar includes a return engagement to the Southeast Iowa Symphony, the Valdosta Symphony, the Israel Philharmonic, a recital in El Paso, and his debut on the Rising Stars series at Ravinia. Mr. Schmidt has performed a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York Youth Symphony, the Music Academy of the West Festival Orchestra, and the Arkansas and Central Florida symphonies. His New York performances include the Museum of Modern Art and the Jewish Museum, and other recital appearances include Dickinson College, Swarthmore College and the Haifa University Museum. In January 1999 he joined Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman with the Israel Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall, and in October that year was a soloist with Mr. Perlman and Mr. Zukerman in Canada at the season opening concert of the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. Giora Schmidt comes from a musical family and began his violin studies in Philadelphia at the age of four. In 1996 he participated in the Ilona Feher Music Center Program with Pinchas Zukerman in Israel, and for the past five summers has taken part in the Perlman Music Program. Other teachers have included Geoffrey Michaels in Philadelphia and Patty Kopec at the Manhattan School of Music. With his strong interest in chamber music, he has studied and performed at the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival, the Music Academy of the West and the Sarasota Chamber Music Festival. Mr. Schmidt plays a Guarneri Del Gesu from 1743, on loan from the Juilliard School. He is the recent recipient of a 2003 Avery Fisher Career Grant. Cellist Zuill Bailey is an engaging, multi-faceted American artist, a powerful performer who dazzles audiences with his technical and artistic command of the cello. His performances include orchestral concerts, recitals and chamber music, both in the United States and abroad. His 2003/04 season began with a performance on opening night of the San Francisco Symphony’s summer season. Other concerto appearances this season include a re-engagement with the Illinois Symphony and performances in Phoenix, Arlington, Annapolis and the Napa Valley. Mr. Bailey presents recitals and chamber music at the Ravinia Festival, Interlochen Center for the Arts, Australian Festival of Chamber Music, France's Consonances Festival in St. Nazaire, and venues in Idaho, California, New Mexico, Virginia, Texas and New York City. He is also featured on SIRIUS Satellite Radio and in live broadcasts on the BBC’s In Tune program. Mr. Bailey has performed extensively throughout the United States, and has appeared with the Chicago, Dallas and New York Chamber symphonies; at the Ravinia, Chautauqua, Vail Valley, Appalachian and Daytona Beach music festivals; with the New Hampshire and Santa Barbara symphonies, and orchestras in Arkansas and North Carolina. He premiered the Theodorakis “Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra” at Carnegie Hall, the Victor Herbert Concerto No. 2 with the National Orchestra of Cuba, and performed recitals at the Manchester International Cello Festival in England, the Matrix Midland Festival in Michigan, Vanderbilt University, the University of Maryland at College Park and at the Des Moines Civic Center. He has also appeared at the Kennedy Center, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, the Lied Center, Wolf Trap, and the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara. A graduate of the Peabody Conservatory and the Juilliard School, Mr. Bailey's principal teachers include Loran Stephenson, Stephen Kates and Joel Krosnick. He performs on a 1693 Matteo Goffriller, formerly owned by Mischa Schneider of the Budapest Quartet. He currently lives in Texas with his wife, artist Margarita Cabrera and son Mateo, and serves as Artistic Director of the El Paso Pro Musica Chamber Festival and Series.
