Caldwell Fine Arts concludes its 2004-05 Season with music from the classics, which has been one of the strengths of the organization since 1961. The Amadeus Trio is one of the most dynamic chamber ensembles performing today. Named after the celebrated composer Amadeus Mozart, the trio has appeared with critical acclaim in such significant musical venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, and San Francisco’s Herbst Theater as well as small towns and colleges across the United States. The Trio recently recorded a CD of works by Dvorak and Smetana for Helicon Records.

The Amadeus combines brilliant virtuosity and superb musicianship with an audience-friendly manner which pleases all listeners. The program will begin with The Mendelssohn Trio in C Minor, Opus 66. This work includes popular Spanish elements from Andalusia, the composer’s home. Beethoven’s “Ghost Trio,” and Mendelssohn’s Trio in D minor complete the program.

The members of the Amadeus include pianist Marian Hahn. She has been awarded top prizes in the Leventritt, Busoni, Concert Artists Guild and the University of Maryland International Competitions. She has been a soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Boston Pops, among others. A graduate of Oberlin and Juilliard, she is on the faculty of Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore.

Violinist Timothy Baker also graduated from the Julliard School where he studied with Ivan Galamian and Nathan Milstein. He has won top prizes at the Tchaikovsky Competition and the International Bach Solo Violin Competition and has appeared as soloist the National Symphony, Baltimore, Boston Pops, Moscow Philharmonic, Stockholm Radio Orchestra and Dallas Chamber Orchestra among others. He owns and performs on the famous and unique “Guitar” Stradivarius violin made in 1726. This violin has rounded sides like a guitar, different from the usual shape of a violin which has sharp angles on the top sides.

Cellist Jeffrey Solow visited Jewett Auditorium in the 1993-94 season as a member of the American Chamber Players with Miles Hoffman. He maintains a busy schedule traveling throughout the United States, Europe, Latin America and the Orient as recitalist, soloist, chamber musician and teacher. His numerous concerto appearances include the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Japan Philharmonic and the American, Milwaukee and Seattle Symphonies. Jeffrey’s recordings can be found on the Columbia, Delos, ABC, Centaur, Everest and Telefunken labels. He has received two Grammy Award nominations. A former student of and assistant to Gregor Piatigorsky, Solow is also a magna cum laude graduate in Philosophy from UCLA. He is Professor of Cello at Temple University in Philadelphia.

The selections committee of the Caldwell Fine Arts first began correspondence with the Amadeus Trio in 2000. They were impressed that chamber music societies across the country scheduled repeat performances of the trio. Finally, the opportunity came. In addition to Caldwell, the Trio is including the University of Idaho and the University of Utah this week. Following the April 2000 concert, The Salt Lake Tribune wrote: “The Amadeus Trio was a hit! The players total involvement in the music made for the kind of performance a listener wishes could last all evening.”
