A native of Tokyo, Kotaro Fukuma, twenty-one, began studying piano at age five with Kyoko SatoClick on picture for a larger view and Kazumi Igeta in Japan, and in 2001, he entered the Paris Conservatory (Conservatoire Nationale Supérieur de Musique de Paris) where he currently studies piano with Bruno Rigutto and chamber music with Marie-Francoise Bucquet. 

Mr. Fukuma won first prize at the 2003 Cleveland International Piano Competition and the Chopin Prize, and he won second prize at the 2002 Helsinki International Maj Lind Piano Competition with the special prize for the best performance of a Finnish composition. He also won first prize at the National Piano Teachers Association Competition (PTNA) in Japan at age seventeen in 1998, and won sixth prize in the Gina Bachauer International Young Artists Piano Competition in Salt Lake City in 1997.

Click on picture for a larger viewMr. Fukuma has given solo recitals in Paris, Pontoise, Annecy, Roquefort les Pins, Bretagne, Viller sur Authie, and Hem in France, and in Salzburg at the Mozarteum. In April 2003, he appeared on the French television series Musique au Coeur playing with violinist Laurent Korcia. He has performed in Tokyo at Suntory Hall, Casals Hall, Shinjuku Opera City Hall, Tsuda Hall, and the Katsushika Symphony Hall, and in Osaka, Kyoto, Yokohama, and many other cities in Japan. Most recently, he has given his New York debut at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center. 

During the next two seasons, in addition to his concertizing in France and Poland, Mr. Fukuma will perform in many states in the US including New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, Florida, and Oregon under the sponsorship of the Cleveland International Piano Competition. Mr. Fukuma will record his debut CD of works by Schumann on Naxos in 2004.
