Italian pianist Roberto Plano won First Prize at the Cleveland International Piano Competition in 2001 and was Third Laureate of the 2003 Honens International Piano Competition in Calgary, Canada. This past summer he was one of the six finalists at the Van Cliburn Competition. (One of those finalists, Chu-Fang Huang of China, is the 2005 Winner of the Cleveland International Piano Competition. She will play on the Caldwell Fine Arts Series as part of her contracted appearances.) Plano performed in Caldwell in February 2002. Since then, he has traveled the world and finished his study at the Ecole Normale “Cortot” in Paris where he earned the “Diplome Superieur De Concertiste” with First Prize. He was selected by the pianist/conductor Philippe Entremont (who played in Caldwell as a young man) to prepare a video project about the music of Mozart which will be broadcast by NHK in Japan. Plano has two recordings: a CD of works by Chopin, Liszt, and Scriabin on Italy’s Sipario Dischi and a disc of works by Liszt on the Azica label. A new recording project on the Canadian label Arktos at the Banff Centre will take place following the Caldwell concert. This opportunity was part of his award for being a competition winner in the Honens Competition. Plano’s friendly and outgoing personality has made him a favorite for guest appearances on a number of radio stations, including NPR’s Performance Today.

“…a young pianist who is destined to be one of the stellar artists of the contemporary age. Plano’s performance demonstrated a flawless technique, moving delicately at lightning speed over the keys. The phrases roared, then whispered, all the while flowing like a swift stream…truly a thrilling evening of music, suggesting a career for the performing artist which will ascend to the highest level of international triumph.” (The Post-Journal Jamestown, NY)

Sylvia's Notes: This is quite an amazing vita! I noticed the reference to Phillipe Entremont, a pianist/conductor of distinction throughout the world. He selected Roberto to be in a video project about the music of Mozart which will be broadcast by NHK in Japan. As a student at College of Idaho in the late 50's, I was a guest host for Entremont, who played on the Lectures and Concerts Series, a precursor to the Caldwell Fine Arts. We enjoyed an ice cream sundae in the small food bar in the basement of Finney Hall. I have cherished that memory and been glad as the name Entremont has achieved prominence.

One of the worthy quotes following his concert appearances after the First Place Award at the Cleveland International Piano Competition in 2001 was by a New York reviewer, Frederick L. Kirshnit, who said, "Although he holds his wrists high above the keyboard, in all other respects the lithe Mr. Plano evoked the poetic and supremely confident spirit of Vladimir Horowitz. Even the selections on his New York debut program seemed to be an homage to Horowitz."

The audience responded enthusiastically to his program at Jewett on November 7, 2002. It is an opportunity to hear him again this season because he is involved in a recording project for the Honens Competition of Calgary, Canada.

Roberto was one of six finalists in the Van Cliburn Competition in July 2005. In the finals, he began suffering from a back problem which required an operation to alleviate the pain and fix the problem. The prognosis is good.
