This visual fiesta of culture and folklore features many regional dances of old Mexico, in particular, their home state of Veracruz (birthplace of the world famous “La Bamba”). The music, performed live on authentic stringed instruments, punctuates the meticulous movement, colorful clothing and perfect pulse established by the dancers. Earning standing ovations from Cuba to Malaysia, Quetzalli proves they are one of Mexico’s most popularClick on picture for a larger view exports!

Maestro Hugo Betancourt founded the Ballet Folkloric “Quetzalli” in 1985. It makes its home in the state capital, Xalapa, Veracruz. They have toured internationally performing traditional folkloric dances, as well as their Afro-Caribbean spectacular, “Carnaval Veracruzano.” The company has been the official representative for Secretary of Tourism and Economic Development for the State of Veracruz since 1986 and has given hundreds of performances across Mexico, the United States, South American, Asia, Europe and the Caribbean. The company has grown to more than 45 dancers and 10 musicians and operates its school and training program for young dancers in Xalapa. “Quetzalli” hosted the National Association of Grupos Folkloricos for the 3rd time in the summer of 2003. Quetzalli continues to be one of the great cultural treasures of Veracruz.

Hugo Betancourt was born in the northern region of Veracruz known as La Huasteca and was exposed to folk music and dance at an early age. His uncle, Humberto Betancourt, was a well-known musician and composer who shared his passion for art and culture. Hugo studied folkloric dance under Maestro Alejandro Gomez Solis. In 1985, along with Rosalinda Perez and Manuel Vasquez, Hugo began to put together repertoire and costumes for the “Quatzalli” company. He has served on the board for the National Association for Grupos Folklorico (USA) and has coordinated their international conference three times. Hugo and his wife, Alejandra, are the proud parents of a daughter, Arantxa, born in December 2002.
