Toni Pimble, artistic director

Treat your family to holiday entertainment and celebrate the cheer of the season. Join Clara in her adventures with Nutcracker Prince in the Land of Snow and Kingdom of the Sweets. Spectacular costumes, familiar music, and the joy of young, local dancers joining the professional cast bring a smile to your face.

Each year this family favorite is renewed with a new costume, a different ballet step, and a few new dancers in the company. The children who were mice may be angels this year and are a little taller and more focused. Caldwell Fine Arts has presented this company 19 years ago as the Eugene Ballet. The joining of that company with Ballet Idaho has made both of the independent companies stronger. The common thread is the artistic director, Toni Pimble, who is really a treasure in the northwest and the east as well since she has choreographed work there. She has received the Governor’s Award for Excellence both in Oregon and Idaho. One of the unique features of this ballet is the Skating Sequence that in many productions is the Snow Scene. The ballet dancers make you believe that the stage has been transformed into an icy glaze. There is even a “crack the whip” line with the final skater having to really hurry to catch a hand.

The favorite part for the children is the fight scene between the Nutcracker (with a little help from Clara’s shoe) and the Mouse King. They like the boom of the cannon although it has surprised and scared very young children. The next favorite part is Mother Sunflower, a large mannequin paper-mache figure with a huge skirt that hides a group of lady bug and beetle children underneath.

The Nutcracker is one of the gifts of the holiday season for many families who have made it a tradition.
