Dream comes true for persistent vampire novelist
When Christopher Farnsworth arrived at The College of Idaho in the late 1980s, he expected to pursue a career in law.
That was before he encountered John Rember, a long-time professor at the C of I and currently the College’s writer-at-large.
“Professor Rember convinced me that the world didn’t necessarily need me to be a lawyer, but that I needed to write,” Farnsworth said. “There were times financially I was not happy with him for helping me make that decision, but in the end it turned out to be the best possible thing I could have done.”
Farnsworth is the author of Blood Oath and The President’s Vampire, the first two books in a popular new series chronicling the adventures of Nathaniel Cade, a vampire sworn to protect the President and the United States from supernatural threats. The third book, Red, White and Blood, is due out in April of 2012. Farnsworth’s book signing tour will stop in at the Boise Barnes & Noble bookstore on May 2.
Farnsworth’s series may one day come to movie theatres as well – Lucas Foster, the Hollywood producer of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, is considering adapting the books to the big screen.
Farnsworth, who graduated from C of I in 1993 with degrees in English and history, also acknowledged the influence C of I history professor Dr. Howard Berger has had on his career.
“Dr. Berger showed me the intellectual procession of ideas in America,” he said. “My history major taught me the place and the importance of our history and culture.”
Farnsworth acknowledged that being a writer is not always glamorous work. It can be financially difficult and it has taken a great deal of personal investment and faith for him to surmount the challenges every writer faces.
“If you’re going to be a writer, you have to get used to the idea that you’re going to fall down a lot,” he said. “The trick is to pick yourself up and fail better the next time.”
