Professor at The C of I returns from China with a project
2007. 10. 30.CALDWELL College of Idaho Political Economy Professor Jim Angresano returned from a monthlong Fulbright fellowship to China with a mission to improve a rural road enough that its residents can connect to the larger province.
Angresano returned from Hainan University last month, where he lectured on research topics that included how ecological issues and globalization apply to China, how universities and the private sector can become partners, and how China developed into the nation it is today.
Hainan University has 20,000 students, a far cry from the 800+ at The College of Idaho. The university is located on the island of Hainan, southwest of Hong Kong.
This was Angresano's fourth Fulbright fellowship and his third as a senior specialist. He previously traveled to China in 2001,2002 and 2005.
Angresano likes to get to know his students and their culture, so he took a small group of them to lunch every day while in Hainan. One of the things that struck him was how quickly the country is developing and progressing.
One of the students he took to lunch was from a small village where the road is unpaved and in poor shape and is impassable during wet weather. It limits the amount of trade and communication the village can have with the surrounding area, and Angresano learned it would only cost $6,000 to improve the road.
I decided I wanted to get involved with something real, Angresano said. As a professor, I do a lot of research, but this is real. These are real people who need assistance.
Angresano will use contacts he has in China to help him raise money, in addition to international development agencies and government officials. He would like to have the money raised by December.
I told them when I left that I want to ride up that road someday, Angresano said.
Angresano and The College of Idaho will host a dinner-auction in the College's Simplot Dining Hall on Dec. 6 at 5:15 p.m. Anyone who would like to attend or donate to the auction can contact Angresano at 459-5480. Monetary donations can be mailed to: Jim Angresano, Professor of Political Economy, The College of Idaho, 2112 Cleveland Blvd, Caldwell, ID 83605.
