Albertson College Students to Discuss Award-Winning Paper and Mathematics Contest on May 9

CALDWELL, ID- Albertson College students Arzhang Fallahi of Caldwell, Dan Groff of Boise and Brian Hibberd of Caldwell outsmarted college and university mathematicians from around the world to take 6th place overall in the 18th annual Mathematics Contest in Modeling (MCM) sponsored by the Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications (COMAP) held in February.
The team will discuss their experience in the contest and their award-winning paper on Thursday, May 9 at 2:30 p.m. in the Boone Science Hall on the Albertson campus. Refreshments will be served, and admission is free.
Albertson topped teams from Boise State University, Carroll College, Grinnell College, University of Washington, Lewis and Clark College and Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics to earn their 6th place finish. In addition, they won a 'meritorious' award for a paper on airline overbooking schemes.
More than 522 teams representing 282 institutions around the world participated in the competition. The MCM contest offers students the opportunity to compete in a team setting using applied mathematics to solve real-world problems. Student teams are challenged to clarify, analyze and propose solutions to open-ended problems.
