Howlin' Yotes Claim Seventh Title

Caldwell (ID) -- The Albertson College of Idaho Speech and Debate Team won their seventh straight Northwest Conference Division II Championship this weekend at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington.
The Yotes achieved a rare 'triple crown' victory in the duo interpretive reading event taking the top prize in all three division of the event. Freshman Freshmen Sarah 'Kiko' Miyasaki and junior John Clinton won their second first-place finish of the season in novice division. Hong Mey Zehn-Castillo and Amanda Richey took first in junior division and first in the senior division. Zehn-Castillo also placed second in junior prose interpretive reading. The tournament was her first collegiate competition.
In debate, Miyasaki and Jesse Holmes took third-place. Zehn-Castillo and Richey placed fifth in the novice division. Seniors Liz McDonagh and John Davis solidified their national rankings with a ninth-place finish in senior division. Hong Mey was recognized as the second best novice debater and McDonagh as the 10th best senior debater. Other speech event awards were won by first year students Sasha Innskeep and Ben Jarvis and Juniors Jamie Summerfield and Leon Samuels.
The tournament was attended by about 30 colleges and universities including Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Montana, Cal-Long Beach, Reed, Whitman, Lewis and Clark and Willamette.
Next month the team will travel to Whitman College for a small tune-up tournament before finishing the season with the Great West Championships in early March and several national championship tournaments.
