Student Philanthropy Council

History of the SPC

A $30,000 grant from the Seagraves Family Foundation to promote philanthropy on campus helped establish the Student Philanthropy Council (SPC) January 2006. The first SPC included eight students, ranging from freshmen to seniors. They established bylaws, developed a grant application process, and distributed applications to community organizations across the Treasure Valley. Their goal was to fund projects that would have a positive impact on the community and an intangible benefit to the College. Since its founding, SPC has awarded grants each year to deserving community organizations.

Also, the SPC-hosted activities raise awareness about philanthropy and so benefit both the College and community academically, socially, and culturally. In 2010, the Idaho Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals awarded the Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy award to the SPC in recognition of its philanthropic efforts throughout the Nampa-Caldwell community.

The 2006 Seagraves Family Foundation grant planted the seed to establish an endowed fund, the Student Philanthropy Council Endowment. News of the success and impact of SPC programs and grants led to a second grant from the Seagraves Family Foundation in July 2014, this time for $100,000. Investment earnings provide about $6,000 -$10,000 each year to be awarded as small grants to deserving charitable causes in the lower Treasure Valley. Recent beneficiaries have included Caldwell Meals on Wheels, Idaho Youth Games, The Mentoring Network, Hands of Hope, Community Cakes, Friends of the Nampa Public Library, and many other local charities.
