Not many college freshmen get a chance to discover a new virus and contribute to the fight against diseases affecting humans. Yet that’s exactly what students taking a College of Idaho introductory biology course this year have done as part of a national genomics research project.

From the impact of land management practices on biodiversity to the unveiling of a strategy game for Android smartphones, the wide-ranging scholarly and creative work of College of Idaho students will be on display during the 8th annual Student Research Conference on Saturday, April 27.

Students from The College of Idaho took home three awards for their outstanding research during the 55th annual symposium of the Idaho Academy of Science.

A dozen C of I undergraduate students presented research projects in botany, ecology, toxicology, astronomy and virology during the annual gathering, which took place March 21-23 in Pocatello.

The College of Idaho is pleased to offer the George V. Wolfe Endowed Scholarship for the 2013-14 academic year in honor of the legendary professor who founded the C of I Department of Political Economy in 1946. The scholarship is awarded each spring to an outstanding C of I student. 

Can practicing mindfulness and meditation lead to reduced stress levels? Will watching political satire shape a person’s political views? Do our personalities influence the types of video games we play, or vice versa? College of Idaho students are looking for answers to these questions as undergraduate researchers in psychology professor Dr. Meredith Minear’s Cognitive Plasticity Lab.

For more than 100 years, The College of Idaho has combined its outstanding academic rigor with a proud tradition of athletic success. From late, great heroes such as supermarket magnate Joe Albertson and National Football League innovator R.C. Owens to current stars like 2012 Major League Baseball draftee Izaac Garsez and two-time national champion distance runner Hillary Holt, the C of I has been home to countless student-athletes who have excelled both in the classroom and in sport. 

The College of Idaho congratulates the 205 students who made the Fall 2012 Dean’s List. To receive Dean's List recognition, a student must complete at least nine graded credits and achieve a GPA of 3.75 or higher for the semester. Nearly 20 percent of the College’s total enrollment made the Dean’s List. Students honored include:

The College of Idaho will create a new chair that further enhances its long-standing strength in developing students’ clarity of thought and writing thanks to a bequest from an anonymous donor.

The Berringer Chair in Writing and Rhetoric will honor legendary C of I English professor Ralph Berringer, who taught at the C of I in the 1950s and 1960s and helped invigorate the intellectual life of the College following World War II.

C of I President Marv Henberg noted that Berringer’s dedication to his students remains an inspiration today.

Amanda Frickle, a 2012 graduate of The College of Idaho, is one of 32 young Americans to be named a Rhodes Scholar this year and becomes the seventh C of I graduate to win the oldest and most celebrated international fellowship award in the world.

Frickle, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history and political economy and served as student body president during the 2011-2012 academic year, was one of nearly 200 national finalists for the award.

A 2012 College of Idaho graduate is a finalist for a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship, with a goal of pursuing a career in social justice advocacy.
