Longtime Music Professor Passes Away

February 13, 2020

The College of Idaho is saddened to learn that Mari Jo Tynon passed away earlier this week at the age of 69.

Tynon served as a music professor at the College from 1990 to 2018. She was a vocal instructor and regularly directed the annual opera put on by the College. She also performed in operas for several years, including in Europe.

“We are all deeply saddened by the death of our long-time, dear colleague Mari Jo. She was a remarkable performer, teacher, and an exceptional person,” said Paul Moulton, the Music department chair. “As a professor at The College of Idaho for nearly three decades, she taught several hundred students in intensive, one-on-one lessons. She influenced and touched the lives of each of her students in often profound ways. She was a gentle teacher and sweet to the core. With her endearing personality she was also a wonderful colleague—easy going, sympathetic, and kind. We have missed her since her retirement nearly two years ago, but we are especially disheartened by her passing, and our hearts go out to her daughter Emily.”
