Krebs family provides nearly $700k gift to C of I in charitable trust

January 3, 2019

Although Anna Tarleton Krebs and Dr. G. Cloyd Krebs have both passed away, their generosity will continue to be felt by The College of Idaho, which has received nearly $700,000 in the form of a charitable trust set up by the Krebs to be distributed following their deaths.

Their gift will provide additional funding to the Smith-Stanford Chair of the biology department.

“They had called us to Provo one day to tell us the news,” said Barry Fujishin, a major gifts officer at the C of I. “They told us they wanted to help. When they told us what they had in mind, we were very honored.”

The Krebs, who met and fell in love at the C of I as undergraduates in the 1940s, were regular contributors to the College before their passing. Prior to this gift, Anna Krebs helped create a scholarship for C of I education students.

After Anna’s graduation from the C of I in 1946, she and Cloyd traveled to Baltimore, Maryland in a World War II army surplus jeep so that Cloyd could finish his final year of medical school at Johns Hopkins Medical School.

After staying in Detroit, Michigan and Denver, Colorado as part of Cloyd’s internship and residency, as well as a stay in France during the Korean War as part of Cloyd’s military service with the United States Air Force, the couple would later settle in Provo, Utah, where Cloyd began a private practice in 1953. Anna worked and taught at each location, including a career with the Provo School District for over two decades.

Cloyd passed away in August 2010, while Anna passed in December 2017. They are survived by their children L. Cloyd Krebs and Cindy Heritage, as well as five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Fujishin said both Anna and Cloyd had a passion for helping younger people as well as the outdoors, with both serving as scoutmasters for their respective Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops in Provo.

“Dr. Krebs was always planning something new,” Fujishin said. “One of the last times I spoke to him before he passed away, he was planning a fishing trip to Alaska. He wasn’t the type to slow down.”
