The Psychology (BA) major is designed for students to gain foundational knowledge and empirical skills and then progress to more advanced work. Students also experience growth in social and personal skills such as teamwork, ethical and social responsibility, self-regulation, and project management. Psychology majors complete a thesis project in their graduating year. Career exploration is an essential part of the psychology programs; students examine how to enter the workforce directly after graduation and how to continue their education through graduate and professional training. The Psychology major emphasizes student choice in survey courses and focuses on an applied thesis experience.
A psychology major enables students to acquire skills valued in a wide range of professions. For example, an understanding of psychology can help a business owner know how to deal with customer complaints, help teachers provide classroom experiences that maximize learning, train medical personnel to understand ways to help patients comply with prescriptive advice, and provide actors and writers with a better understanding of the foibles of human (mis)behavior. Additionally, our graduates have pursued graduate education in psychology as well as careers in research or applied psychology
Each summer, College faculty and students partner with the Wood River YMCA to bolster educational outcomes for children in Idaho’s Wood River Valley. Despite being a popular recreational, tourist-heavy destination, many families struggle economically, often resulting in their children falling behind their peers academically.
After minoring in Psychology at the College, Abucar Mohamed ’24 is heading to Cornell University to complete an MD/PhD program. Watch a highlight of “Nic Sick,” a documentary about teen vaping in Idaho in which Mohamed is featured as an expert based on PhD-level research he completed while at the College.

The moment I laid eyes on the College campus for a tour, I knew this was where I was going to be spending the next four years. I like the intimate campus community and the student-to-teacher ratio. It felt like a place I could call home. Plus, I chose The College of Idaho because of its flexible curriculum, allowing me to double major, and its excellent financial aid, making college a reality for me without any debt.

On top of that, an incredible scholarship package made The College of Idaho feel like home, and I knew it was the right place to spend the next few years of my life.

Molly Leadbetter ’11 co-owns Meriweather Cider in Boise and is Idaho’s first and only Pommelier – joining an esteemed list of just over 100 individuals worldwide. “I want Idaho cider to be taken seriously on the national stage and having great cider—which we do—and educated folks in the industry makes all the difference,” she recently said in an interview with Visit Idaho.

The best experiences I’ve had as a Yote are tied to our family-like culture. When our whole basketball team decided to help out on campus clean-up day, I was very shocked to see our presidents, who looked like they had been out cleaning for a couple of hours. That’s when I know that this place was different. It starts with our leadership! They will do anything to make sure you have the best experience possible at CofI, even if it’s picking weeds.
