“America’s Favorite Cowboys” ride in to Jewett Auditorium on September 23 for two performances full of cowboy classics and Western wit. Join Riders in the Sky in a thrilling ride to yesteryear as they salute iconic western movie, music and TV star Roy Rogers, undisputed “King of the Cowboys.” The evening show features family-friendly favorites from Roy’s long career that include Don’t Fence Me In, Pecos Bill, Happy Trails and more wrapped up in the Riders’ two-time Grammy-winning high yodeling style. “Roy was my idol, plain and simple,” says Rider Too Slim. “This show will trigger (sorry about that) a lot of memories for folks our age, and introduce new generations to a wonderful man and artist who deserves to be celebrated.”
To help introduce a younger crowd to this genre, Caldwell Fine Arts also presents a one-hour Grandparents Show. Riders in the Sky are well known for their Grammy-winning soundtracks for Toy Story 2 and Monsters, Inc. The Grandparents Show will combine classic cowboy music with Pixar favorites in a show that all generations will appreciate. Before each concert, a Wild West Town will offer horseshoes, stick horse races, panning for gold, and a photo booth.
Alison Moulton, Executive Director of Caldwell Fine Arts, hopes to see all ages attending together. “Lots of grandmas take their granddaughters to our Nutcracker Ballet and Clara’s Tea Party," she said. "We thought it would be fun to create an event where grandpas could take their grandchildren out for a night of cowboy fun. Riders is a group that will please all ages.”
As a classic cowboy quartet, the trail has led them to heights they could have never predicted. Riders have chalked up over 6100 concert appearances in all 50 states and 10 countries, appearing in venues everywhere from the Nashville National Guard Armory to Carnegie Hall, and from county fairs to the Hollywood Bowl. Their cowboy charisma and comedic flair made them naturals for TV, and landed them their own weekly show on TNN, as well as a Saturday morning series on CBS. They have been guests on countless TV specials, documentaries and variety shows, appearing with everyone from Barney to Penn & Teller. But history will most certainly remember Riders In The Sky as the loveable cowboys from Woody's Round Up in Toy Story 2, with the album of the same name garnering Riders their first Grammy Award in 2001 for "Best Musical Album for Children." Two years later, Riders roped their second Grammy in the same category, for Monsters Inc. - Scream Factory Favorites, the companion CD to Pixar's award winning movie.
In 1982, Riders In The Sky became the first, and to date only, exclusively Western music artist to join the Grand Ole Opry, the longest running radio show in history. After 30 years, the never-ending trail drive continues. The ponies are rested and watered, and America's Favorite Cowboys are ready to saddle up and ride, bringing good beef to hungry people wherever they may be.
The Grandparent Show will start at 4 p.m. and the Tribute to Roy Rogers will start at 7 p.m. Tickets for the Grandparent Show range from $8-12 for adults and $5-10 for children, while the evening concert features tickets in the $10-25 range for adults and $5-12 range for children.
