College of Idaho Professor Contributes to Groundbreaking Book on Collective Effervescence

November 6, 2025

The College of Idaho Sociology Professor Scott Draper has contributed a chapter to a forthcoming multi-author book, Collective Effervescence, set to be released in February 2026 by Temple University Press. The book, edited by Sebastien Tutenges (Aarhus University) and Philip Smith (Yale University), explores how collective effervescence manifests across a wide range of social settings — from religious rituals to everyday gatherings — and why these shared emotional experiences are vital to human connection.

Dr. Draper’s chapter examines the influence of sound and volume in shaping collective effervescence within religious contexts. His work joins that of several distinguished international scholars, including sociologists Randall Collins, Ashley Meares, and Brad West.

Several current and former Yotes also contributed to this project through valuable research assistance, including Suhaila Arni Muhammed, Lex Jones, Kevin Bui (’23), Ronan Byrne (’25), and Trinity Miller (’24). Draper also expressed gratitude to professors Sean Blackwell, Paul Moulton, and Aaron Weiss for their insightful feedback throughout the process.

The book represents a major step in cross-disciplinary scholarship, bridging sociology, anthropology, and cultural studies to better understand how collective human energy drives meaning and unity.
