How to Balance Work, Life, and a DMSc Program: Tips for Busy PAs

July 16, 2025

It is possible for PAs to earn a Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) degree while working full-time and maintaining healthy balance between work, school, and life. Here are four key steps to help you move forward in your education and career while staying grounded and focused.

1. Maximize Bite-Sized Learning Moments

Even five minutes can make a difference. Utilize short breaks during your workday or commute to read, write, or review course material. Load reading assignments onto your phone or tablet, or use an audio recorder app to capture ideas on the go. These small moments can build momentum and lead to more productive study sessions, especially on days when motivation is low.

2. Map Out Your Assignments Early

At the start of each term, review your syllabus and create a master schedule of assignments. Align these due dates with your personal and professional calendar to avoid last-minute stress. This proactive approach allows you to plan ahead during slower weeks and stay on top of your coursework during busier times.

3. Get Ahead on Weekends

Most asynchronous DMSc programs have assignments due midweek or on weekends. Instead of waiting until after work when mental fatigue sets in, use the weekend before the week officially begins to get ahead. Working ahead this way helps you stay focused, reduces stress, and creates room during the week for family, rest, or self-care.

4. Proactively Build a Support System

Strong support leads to success. Inform your employer and coworkers about your educational goals; they may become your biggest cheerleaders. Also, take advantage of your instructors' office hours to ask questions, clarify expectations, and stay engaged in your learning community. Finally, leverage opportunities to connect with your classmates. Remote education can feel isolating. Networking with classmates creates a sense of community that will consistently motivate you.
