First Day of Class

  • What better way to celebrate the first day of school than some special First Day of School pictures? We set up an outdoor photo studio in the Quad on Wednesday afternoon to get some shots of students on the opening day of class – we brought the props, they brought the smiles!   • The College of Idaho sends its condolences to the friends and family of Professor Emeritus Wallace “Wally” G. Lonergan, a C of I graduate and later longtime member of the C of I’s business faculty who passed away in Caldwell, Idaho from natural causes on Monday, Aug. 27, 2018 at the age of 90.   • 2018 was a banner year for The College of Idaho in terms of major construction projects, from the completion of renovations to Voorhees and Finney Halls to the grand opening of the Cruzen-Murray Library. Each project now has the opportunity to be recognized among the top construction projects in Idaho as finalists in the Idaho Business Review’s 2018 Idaho Top Projects awards.   • Coyote Athletics Roundup: Men’s football started off their season away, falling in a close game against Eastern Oregon University 24-21. Their first home game is scheduled for this Saturday against Montana Tech… Women’s soccer has started its season with a major statement, shutting out Simpson University 11-0 in the program’s highest scoring game since 1993, as well as picking up a victory against Sierra Nevada College to start their season undefeated. Sophomore Cameron Coyle was named Red Lion-Cascade Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for her role in each win. Men’s soccer took part in an exhibition against rival Northwest Nazarene University, falling to the Nighthawks 1-0…Volleyball improved its record to 5-3 with victories against MSU Northern, Carroll and Montana Tech. Senior Marija Djonovic received Red Lion-Cascade Conference Setter of the Week honors for the second week in a row… Greg Colby has been elevated from assistant coach of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving program to interim head coach, replacing former head coach Jim Everett, who stepped away from coaching duties to become co-president of the College….Both men’s and women’s C of I cross country teams are ranked among the Top 10 in the NAIA Top-25 Coaches’ Poll, with the men’s squad at No. 6 and the Lady Yotes at No. 8. It is the 75th consecutive week in the Top-25 for the women – the longest streak in the NAIA at the moment…Men’s basketball is holding its annual Coaching Clinic on Sept. 8 in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center, including speakers Tricia Binford, Dedrique Taylor, Carrick Felix, Coby Karl and C of I men’s coach Colby Blaine…The 2018 Coyote Baseball Alumni Game is set for Sunday, September 23, welcoming all C of I baseball alumni and their families for a day of fun on the diamond. The 2018 Softball Alumni Game will be held on Oct. 7 in conjunction with Homecoming Weekend.

  • Faculty and Staff News: C of I political economy professor Jasper LiCalzi appeared for an interview on Boise State Public Radio’s Idaho Matters to discuss the role of the press in America today, including the impacts of “fake news” and how Idaho journalists have reacted to negative reactions.   • Alumni News and Notes: Mark Coonts ’04 will accept the position of lead public defender for the Gem County Public Defenders Office on Sept. 1. Coots, a native of Stanley who completed his law degree at the University of Idaho following his graduation from the C of I, worked for the last seven years as a public defender in Ada County.
