- C of I’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day events received significant media attention this year, including reports from KTVB and the Idaho-Press Tribune for both our on-campus and off-campus events. Thank you to all who attended any of our events on Jan. 15!
- We also received a significant amount of attention about an on-campus incident that occurred on the same day regarding a gun threat. We are pleased to report there were no injuries following the threat, and we worked together with both Campus Safety and the Caldwell Police Department to ensure the well-being of our students, staff and faculty via our emergency lockdown measures. - Coyote Athletics Roundup: Men’s basketball continues its hot streak, earning wins against Warner Pacific, Multnomah, NW Christian, Corban, and Eastern Oregon over the last two weeks. Meanwhile, the Lady Yotes picked up wins of their own against Warner Pacific, Multnomah and Corban, but fell in upset bids against NW Christian and Eastern Oregon…The Yotes skiing programs are both off to an excellent start, with the men earning team wins at Brundage Mountain in the giant slalom qualifier, as well as an individual gold medal for Lucas Underkoffler. The women finished second in the team standings in the opening event, but won gold in the second, with Elyse Burandt claiming gold in both individual standings…Both men’s and women’s swimming programs earned wins at Pacific University…Hayley Morse broke two school records in the 20-pound weight throw at the Bronco Invitational, becoming the first Lady Yote to qualify for the NAIA Championships in the event. Morse was also named the Red Lion Cascade Conference Athlete of the Week with her record breaking hammer throw at the Ed Jacoby Invitational, ranking fourth in the NAIA for the indoor season. Teammate Allison Cossins broke the indoor school record for the pole vault at the Ed Jacoby Invitational, as well, becoming the sole winner for the Lady Yotes in individual events. On the men’s side, Josh Brown was named the conference Athlete of the Week after finishing first among NAIA competitors in the Bronco Invitational weight throw, earning a ‘B’ mark for his second-best mark in the school’s history. At the Jacoby invite, Kristopher Kostelecky finshed fourth place in the heptathlon.
- The Yotes Mascot Challenge dynasty is back and ready to compete in the Cascade Collegiate Conference’s 5th Annual Mascot Challenge! The Yotes picked up wins the last three years running, defending its 2015 title in 2016 and 2017. Following the opening round of Facebook voting, the Yote was seeded No. 2 in the eight-mascot single-elimination bracket, and has moved forward to the semifinals after a win against Mr. Beacon of Northwest Christian University on Jan. 22. The Yote will compete in the semifinals on Jan. 30-31 via voting on Twitter — follow @CCCSports and remember to vote! #GoPurple #Fourpeat
- Alumni News and Notes: NBA legend and C of I Athletics Hall of Famer Elgin Baylor will join fellow Lakers all-stars Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jerry West and Shaquille O’Neal as one of the only Lakers players to receive a significant honor: a statue outside the Staples Center. The statue is set to be unveiled during a ceremony prior to the Lakers vs. Timberwolves game on April 6…Dr. Chad Hickcox ’93 will join the Walla Walla Community College administration on Feb. 20 as vice president of instruction. Prior to joining the team at Walla Walla, Hickcox served as chief academic officer at Helena College in Montana.
- Faculty News and Notes: Former C of I music instructor Dr. Daniel Stern announced his intention to retire following the conclusion of the Boise Baroque Chamber Orchestra’s 2018-2019 season. In addition to his work at the C of I, Stern also led the Boise Philharmonic as its music director from 1974-1987, and conducted numerous performances with Opera Idaho and Ballet Idaho. He received the Governor’s Award in the Arts for lifetime achievement in 2014.
