This summer, a group of student researchers and faculty members from The College of Idaho will embark on a three-week trip to the Thailand-Myanmar border to document the experiences of Dara’ang refugees in the area — a trip financed by a competitive $35,000 ASIANetwork-Freeman Student-Faculty Fellows Grant.
After College of Idaho history professor Dr. Mark Smith transitioned from his ten-year role as the College’s vice president of academic affairs back to his position as a full-time faculty member, he knew he wanted to jump into a new research program combining his expertise in ancient Roman history and archaeology. His choice in research at that time has ultimately led to the publication of his new book, “The Final Days of Jesus: The Thrill of Defeat, The Agony of Victory: A Classical Historian Explores Jesus’s Arrest, Trial, and Execution,” which examines the trial and death of Jesus Christ in the historical context and culture of the Roman Empire.
The College of Idaho’s Carter-Chalker Lectureship on Faith and Contemporary Issues will host prominent sociologist and interfaith leader, Dr. Eboo Patel, for a Feb. 21st campus visit and public lecture. Patel’s stay will include class visits, conversations with faculty and Student Life, and the free public lecture “Acts of Faith: Bridging Interfaith Barriers,” which is set for 7 p.m. in the Langroise Center for Performing and Fine Arts on the C of I campus in Caldwell.
College of Idaho Interim President Dr. Bob Hoover sat comfortably on the side of the stage in the Langroise Recital Hall, casually facing the packed house of staff, faculty, administration and trustees who had come to hear him deliver his State of the College address. Although a podium had been placed on the stage for Hoover’s use, he preferred the freedom to stand away from it, choosing instead to address the audience as he would have addressed students attending one of his lectures.
The audience had gathered to hear from Hoover about the direction of the College’s future in the midst of increasing expenses and a decline in enrollment since Fall 2014. Hoover’s address sought to reassure both the attendees as well as those watching the event over Facebook Live that the future was still positive despite the challenges the College has faced in recent years.
The Fall 2017 issue of The College of Idaho’s alumni magazine, Quest, is now being sent to the College’s mailing list and is available to read for free online at the College’s website.
The winter evening chill was the last thing on the mind of College of Idaho senior music major Dallin Kroon as he marched down Blaine Street into downtown Caldwell pounding on his drum alongside the rest of the C of I Marching Band during the 15th Annual Treasure Valley Night Light Parade on Dec. 2.
With the opening of a new Student Research Room in the basement of Boone Hall, The College of Idaho’s Department of Mathematics and Physical Sciences (MAPS) welcomed back emeritus faculty members and successful alumni of the program to celebrate the occasion with an open house reception and colloquium talk.
The College of Idaho Board of Trustees has formed a search committee to help select the College’s 14th president, and is currently reaching out to the community to help gather qualified candidates.
When they aren’t mentoring the next generation of artists in Langroise Hall, the faculty of The College of Idaho’s art department works to perfect their own craft. Starting on Sept. 14, 2017, the faculty will present their own work for the Rosenthal Faculty Art Show, which will be one of many activities making up the College’s 2017 Homecoming Week.
